A Day in the Life
In this role as a Senior AI/Data Science Engineer, you will be a key contributor to the success of new product development initiatives in Acute Care and Monitoring. Responsibilities may include the following, and other duties may be assigned. You will collaborate with engineering, clinical, and product development teams to identify opportunities for data-driven solutions and help shape the future of our products through algorithm development.
Your responsibilities may include designing and developing algorithms, supporting data strategy and analysis, and partnering with cross-functional teams to integrate algorithms into innovative product features. You will leverage your engineering expertise to ensure robust deployment of algorithms, troubleshoot data-related challenges, and optimize the performance of solutions. You will support both product development and lifecycle maintenance by building, analyzing, and evaluating data to identify opportunities and generate actionable insight and solutions.
This is a highly collaborative role, requiring excellent communication and teamwork skills. You will work cross-functionally with hardware and firmware engineers, systems engineers, clinical data engineers, and other stakeholders to drive impactful product innovations.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
New Product Design Activities
- Develop and program integrated software algorithms to structure, analyze and leverage data in product and systems applications in both structured and unstructured environments.
- Develop and communicate descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive insights/algorithms.
Contribute to test plans, perform testing and debugging and investigations for both clinical and bench data.
Collaborate with Firmware Engineers to translate algorithms from the development environment into firmware code.
Develop and apply deep learning techniques to solve relevant, complex problems for our patients and customers.
Use machine language and statistical modeling techniques such as decision trees, logistic regression, Bayesian analysis and others to develop and evaluate algorithms to improve product/system performance, quality, data management and accuracy.
Product / Systems Improvement Activities
Evaluate existing algorithms to improve product/system performance, quality, data management and accuracy.
Contribute to field investigations through data aggregation and analysis, modeling, and root cause analysis.
Cross-functional Collaboration and Documentation
Collaborate closely with internal cross-functional teams to understand requirements and translate them into robust solutions.
Communicate results and technical concepts through effective visualizations and clear reporting to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Document algorithm designs, solutions, recommendations, and decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders to comply with quality and regulatory requirements and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, computer/software, biomedical or similar Engineering with 4+ years of experience OR Master’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience, OR PhD with 0 years of experience.
- Experience designing and developing algorithms, simulations, and models
- 2+ years experience using programming languages including Python and Matlab
Nice to Have
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering/Science and/or Data Science.
- Experience with large scale computing frameworks, data analysis systems and modeling environments.
- Proven track record of delivering on complex projects.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking abilities.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Medical device development experience, design control, FDA and MDR regulations.
- Experience in Using machine language and statistical modeling techniques such as decision trees, logistic regression, Bayesian analysis and others to develop and evaluate algorithms to improve product/system performance, quality, data management and accuracy.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements (FDA, IEC, ISO) and quality management systems.
- Demonstrate skills in “systems thinking” – ability to consider problems, implementations, and impacts at a higher system level
- Experience in applying deep learning techniques to translate data-driven insights into actionable solutions
- Experience in design for six sigma or similar engineering practices
- Experience with light based sensing

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$138,400.00 - $207,600.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others)
