A Day in the Life
As a Big Capital Engineer, you will facilitate the quick resolution of any need of repair and installation of our Big Capital equipment which includes, but are not limited to: Hugo™ Robotic-Assisted Surgery system, O-arm™ intraoperative 2D/3D imaging system, Mazor™ Robotic guidance system, Affera™ Mapping and Ablation System.
You are responsible for ensuring that root causes are correctively identified, proposing corrective actions that will eliminate failure modes, ensuring corrective actions are taken and documented. You will develop processes for the testing, rework, repair, and disposition of all Service Returned products for the Big Capital Organizational Units (OU). You may work with the OU’s Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality teams, including the Complaint department to determine product failures. You will also be responsible for complying with all local and global policies and procedures.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:
- Perform functional testing on large capital equipment across electronic, mechanical, electromechanical, and optical systems to ensure full system compliance before shipment to customers
- Test, troubleshoot, calibrate, adjust, diagnose, and maintain equipment, components, devices, and systems while setting up and operating machines, equipment, and fixtures required for repair and testing processes
- Manage return inventory operations, including triage, inventory movements, preparation for failure analysis, and tracking of returned inventory locations
- Support laboratory activities such as crating and uncrating high-level assemblies, spare parts handling, and other assigned operational tasks
- Serve as a subject matter expert in the manufacture and repair of Class III medical devices, analyzing product failures, performing troubleshooting, identifying root causes, and verifying corrective actions
- Lead and support failure investigations in cross-functional, multi-site environments (R&D, Regulatory, Quality, Procurement, Supply Chain, Supplier Quality/Development, and Manufacturing/Operations) while using statistical techniques to provide evidence-based root cause conclusions
- Drive complex experiments and testing on existing product lines to investigate manufacturing issues, analyze results, recommend improvements, produce reports, complete decontamination procedures on returned parts, and train or coach employees on advanced procedures and root cause analysis methods.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering with a minimum of 2 years of experience or master’s degree with 1 year of experience in the medical device industry with key technologies and processes related to the assembly and manufacture of Class II or III devices
- Experience in leading and serving in a technical role for Failure Analysis or Reliability Engineering
- Experience with Big Capital platform or complex mechanical system
Extensive knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, and concepts relevant to engineering, especially product development, manufacturing engineering, and failure modes and experience with a variety of software packages, e.g, Agile, SAP, etc are considered advantages for this role.
