As a Prototype Machinist, you will be a key member of the R&D organization where you will manufacture prototypes to support the development of innovative products to treat spinal pathologies. In this role, you will be responsible to provide the business with implant and instrument prototypes required to support the product design process from ideation through commercialization. This role will not only create prototypes but will also provide manufacturing advice to the R&D team.
As a Prototype Machinist, you will be responsible for the production of prototypes and test fixtures as needed to support R&D programs. You will also be responsible for interacting with the engineering and management staffs to advise on design for manufacturability as well as supporting the department’s management by ordering supplies, conducting routine maintenance, and assisting in other areas of the daily operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Production of prototype components, assemblies, and test fixtures to support operations.
Provide estimates for projects and strive to meet project timeline deliverables.
Responsible for identifying material and perishable tooling needed for each job.
Responsible for set up, operation, and manual programming of all equipment as needed to complete each job.
Mentor and assist junior level Technicians in advanced programming and job processing.
Assist management with scheduling.
Serve as a resource for Product Development personnel to provide guidance on manufacturing practices, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and other manufacturing issues.
Responsible for completing periodic maintenance on all Model Shop equipment and identify equipment repair when needed.
Responsible for identifying new equipment needs and helping management to decide on brands and accessories that expand or meet capabilities required of Model Shop.
Responsible for maintaining an adequate level of department consumables to prevent project disruptions.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work with and provide technical leadership to development engineers, lab technicians, and test engineers.
Ensure adherence to product specifications, industry standards, and quality and regulatory procedures and requirements.
Create innovative technical solutions which lead to the development of prototypes that support ongoing business objectives.
Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
High School degree or GED and 8 years machining experience with conventional and CNC equipment preferred, a Machinist or Tool and Die Maker apprenticeship is a plus.
5 years experience in model making or prototyping role is preferred
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced skills in machining methods preferred; 5 axis milling, 6 axis Lathe, Wire EDM, Sinker EDM.
CNC programming experience required; MasterCam preferred
Strong manual machining background, including set up and operating skills for CNC.
Ability to create Multi-Axis CNC programs and edit CAM-generated programs on the shop floor.
Ability to solve problems and communicate effectively with engineering personnel.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, and work efficiently to accomplish each of them in a timely
manner.
For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$68,800.00 - $103,200.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
