A Day in the Life
The Principal Medical Science Liaison will serve both internally and externally as the primary scientific subject matter expert for the assigned therapeutic area(s). This role will create and maintain scientific relationships with KOLs and medical societies in order to provide education on the science behind technologies as well as gain external insights on those therapeutic areas. They will strategically manage local evidence plans considering market needs, changing local environment and the competitive evidence landscape. They will also oversee Clinical Research study execution in Canada. This individual will stay up to date with the evolving evidence landscape, clinical practice trends and competitive research in order to provide internal & external scientific support on relevant business activities.
This role supports our Cardiac business - Structural Heart and Cardiac Surgery
MAIN JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (may include the following and other duties may be assigned):
• Demonstrates extensive knowledge of all clinical and scientific data for our products and maintains a deep understanding of the science behind our products.
• Nurtures deep, collegial relationships with key thought leaders, professional societies, and payers.
• Drives the adoption of tools and techniques for the safe and effective use of our products.
• Builds relationships and demonstrates the clinical outcome and benefits of company products to thought leaders, medical groups, government agencies, key opinion leaders and health systems, consumer-ready medical products by communicating product-related information to investigators and institutions.
• Provides perspective to field activities associated with growing existing products and bringing new products to market.
• MD Designation only: Licensed MD may also need bridge communication between sales, marketing and clinical.
• Conducts continuing education workshops, seminars, and programs for graduate physicians, pharmacists, and scientists.
• Responsible for reporting complaints and Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR)
Medical Science Activities:
Proactively leads gathering internal and external stakeholder input on evidence gaps that are Canadian barriers to adoption of priority technologies. Autonomously develops innovative options & projects to fill those gaps.
Actively seeks Canadian participation in global Medtronic studies, real world evidence projects and external scientific partnerships that support local evidence gaps in business priority areas.
Represents Medtronic at national and international meetings by organizing and leading clinical discussions, providing a preview of scientific sessions of interest to the commercial team, and summarizing business relevant congress presentations for internal stakeholders. Proactively works with internal stakeholders and KOLs to suggest/organize presentations or abstracts for local congresses on topics of interest related to Medtronic technology.
Acts as a recognized internal & external expert of ongoing clinical & technology trends, competitive intelligence, clinical evidence and society guidelines & recommendations. Maintains that expertise through intel tracking, congress attendance, workshops, and training programs.
Develops the strategy and drives the planning and implementation for HCP medical/scientific engagement to achieve the milestones outlined for the organization.
Develops, fosters, and maintains key relationships with emerging and established KOLs and centers strategically aligned with the business to increase market access and development opportunities and to aid in the education of other HCPs as directed.
Engages in in-depth, unbiased, and non-promotional discussions with HCPs about recent clinical trials and overall clinical evidence summaries, which can be presented during office visits, hospital seminars, and customer dinners and online events. Uses expert level knowledge and experience to navigate complex and difficult discussion topics.
Drives the strategy for Medical Society relations. Develops relationships with Medical Societies and offers education/discussion on evolving evidence as well as gain an understanding of society directions and insights.
Provides education to business teams on new, relevant clinical evidence and develops tools to summarize that evidence. Provides the context of how new evidence how it fits into the broader medical literature landscape.
Synthesizes complex scientific information into logical, relevant narratives that inform/educate business leaders & offer suggestions to optimize business strategy.
Provides scientific support for meetings or evidence information requests from government payors or HTA organizations.
Reactively replies to unsolicited off-label requests to provide HCPs with accurate information from scientific literature.
Leads/facilitates advisory boards in partnership with other functions.
Acts as a mentor to more junior level Medical Science team members.
May initiate & lead enterprise level projects for the Medical Science team.
Clinical Research Activities
- Facilitates initial discussions, intake, and evaluation of external research proposals, including feedback to HCPs on potential research ideas/questions. Leverages expert level therapy knowledge to ensurethe most impactful research is being supported & completed in a timely manner in the ERP portfolio.
- Acts as local liaison for global Medtronic studies. This includes, but is not limited to: nomination of sites, oversight of regulatory submissions & site start-up in partnership with head office study team, and oversight of clinical product importation/distribution.

Required Knowledge and Experience: Requires mastery of a specialty area and full knowledge of industry practices, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. May have broad knowledge of project management. Requires a Baccalaureate degree and minimum 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience

• Degree in life science or biomedical engineering
JOB EXPERIENCE
• Minimum 7 years relevant experience with bachelor’s degree or
• Minimum 5 years relevant experience with advanced degree
• Metech/pharma industry experience in a physician facing role
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES
• Effective and proven strong communication (both verbal and written) and presentation skills
• Strong knowledge of clinical study design and statistical methods
• Ability to communicate complex scientific/medical issues in a crisp and clear manner both to scientific and lay audiences
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively on cross-function teams
