Job Requirements (Core Competencies)

  • Education: Associate degree in physical education, exercise physiology, wellness, health education or related field preferred. Personal training, fitness, wellness or coaching certification required.

  • Licensure/Certification:  Personal training, fitness, or coaching certification required.  BLS certification required within 90 day orientation period.

  • Experience:  Previous wellness center, coaching, exercise/personal training experience required. 

  • Other required skills and abilities:  Clinical skills: Ability to review health assessment data:   basic labs, risk profile, wellness assessments, fitness tests, bp, heart rate, body composition as applied to a general level of health and wellness and in relation to basic disease processes (heart, vascular, diabetes).  Knowledge & experience in basic human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and psychosocial considerations.   Knowledge and experience in physical assessment, exercise training, protocols, and techniques.  Experience in adult education, lifestyle change, health/wellness coaching, behavioral management, personal training.  BLS required (within 3 months of hire date). 

  • Communication Skills:  Computer Skills– experience with internet, MS Word, Excel or ability to acquire.   Experience & fluency in developing written educational/informational materials.  Ability to role model healthy lifestyle.  The ability to plan and present education programs to employees & community organizations, schools, and wellness clients.  Ability to assist with health screens for employees, other businesses and community based.

  • Physical Abilities: Vision sufficient to read medical records and instruments, documentation and visual changes in clients’ condition. Hearing sufficient to interact with client who may be unable to speak at normal voice level. Mobility (including stooping, bending lifting and reaching) and dexterity sufficient to assist clients and handle required instruments. Ability to model appropriate exercise techniques via variety of mediums or equipment.


Under the general supervision of the manager of Rehabilitation and Clinic Supervisor the Wellness Specialist promotes and educates target populations on health promotion/wellness activities and services.  Consults, collaborates with wellness related programming within Mercy, Centura and for outside organizations and companies as needed.  Remains current on the state of the art wellness/lifestyle concepts, personal training & exercise and health/wellness coaching.  Provides exercise/wellness/lifestyle coaching to employees and to other businesses and community, as appropriate

Physical Requirements

  • Medium Work - exert/lift up to 50 lbs force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs constantly.
