Our team is looking for someone that can broaden and extend Corning Inc.’s competency in the field of measurements and inspection of glass surfaces thru characterization, system design / development, and implementation of prototypes to manufacturing. This will require you to develop, promote and implement low cost solutions that provide understanding to glass surface quality. You will also be responsible to deliver early Stage development systems, processes and equipment with major business impact.

Scope of position:

You will develop, assemble, test and deploy measurement systems in support of manufacturing process control and inspection of Corning products. Work as part of a team to manage the transfer of technology from development to manufacturing.

Day to day responsibilities:

You will use off-the-shelf instruments or develop new measurement methods to optimize manufacturing processes or inspect the quality of Corning products.

Demonstrate proof-of-concept in lab environment.

Engineer measurement solutions that are suitable for use in manufacturing.

You will work with a variety of multi-functional groups (Development, Quality, IT, Purchasing, Operations) and external suppliers for key technologies or strengths you'll need such as system integration.

You will be asked to define Scopes of Work, competitively quote when appropriate, issue Purchase Orders, track supplier work and approve invoices.

Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement improvements to measurement systems or production processes.

Create/update documentation for release to production including Machine Specifications; operating procedures and drawing packages.

Train engineering, maintenance and operations people how to use and maintain measurement systems.

Provide remote and onsite troubleshooting using data and performance analysis of the installed systems.

Travel Requirements:

Estimate travel at 20% - 40%, depending upon specific project assignment. Domestic and international travel (Asia, Europe). Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up as well as for routine interaction with Customers and Suppliers. 1-2 week trips are typical.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

40 hrs./week minimum required

Education & Experience: BS, MS or PhD in Physics, Optics, ME, EE, or Computer Engineering

Hands on experience with machine vision systems and metrology equipment

Required experience/skills:

Measurement system development or characterization

Machine Vision system design & development

Optical system design

Knowledge of image processing algorithms (blob analysis, edge finding, morphology, feature extraction, classification, metrology)

Strong programming in C# (or .NET)

Experience with electrical/optical/mechanical installations, including system checkout and troubleshooting

Data retrieval, plotting and analysis (primarily using Microsoft Excel)

Desired experience/skills:

Machine Vision system development (optics, lighting, cameras, image acquisition, image analysis)

Knowledge of image processing algorithms (blob analysis, edge finding, morphology, feature extraction, classification, metrology)

Control systems (PLCs)

Process engineering knowledge. Experienced with design of experiments, statistical analysis and process improvement

Experience with Metrology, Inspection and Product Quality in support of production organizations

Motion Control – ability to integrate motion on imaging platform

Computing – familiar with high performance computing systems

Soft Skills:

Ability to multi- task and work with others for whom English is not their primary language
