Overview

The Technician Supervisor helps oversee the daily operations of the pharmacy to ensure efficient and accurate medication services according to established standards of practice. The Technician Supervisor participates in the supervision of the technician staff, scheduling, payroll, evaluation of technician work performance, recruitment and hiring activities, training/in-services, performance improvement activities of staff, process improvements in the provision of pharmacy services, and filling in for coverage of technician duties as necessary. The Tech Supervisor is cross trained and able to provide expert level oversight and perform the duties of every applicable technical staff position in the area of responsibility, which may include IV technician, evening and night shift work, and placing direct or wholesaler pharmaceutical orders.The Tech Supervisor serves as liaison between support staff, professional staff (pharmacists), pharmacy management, and other departments as needed. The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor will work collaboratively with and under the direction of the Pharmacy Operations Manager to systematize processes for a safe, productive, and cost efficient delivery of pharmaceutical care.

Responsibilities

Patient Care* Performs all patient care functions expected of a Pharmacy Technician 3 in their area of responsibility with advanced experience and knowledge in these areas.

* Provides support and supervision of technician staff in the provision of these functions.
* Communicates with patient care units and staff to ensure efficient pharmacy services.
* Functions as a staff technician when necessary to meet department workload requirements.
* Participates in process improvement to ensure safe and efficient delivery of pharmaceutical services to patients.

Administrative* Demonstrates leadership skills in ability to delegate tasks to appropriate personnel, educate staff within and outside of the department, identify and solve potential problems.

* Coordinates technician staffing to assure adequate personnel is available for providing pharmacy services.
* Oversees pharmacy technician orientation, training, and competency testing.
* Responsible for pharmacy technician evaluations and goal setting.
* Assists in technician staff recruitment and retention processes.
* Assists in the writing, reviewing, and regularly communicates policies and procedures related to the provision of pharmaceutical care.
* Work with pharmacy management to appraise daily support staff workflow and allocate resources to ensure optimal daily performance.
* Regularly works shifts (at least one per month) in order to keep up skills and familiarity with pharmacy operations.
* Able to fill in for any support position, as needed, in areas including but not limited to sterile and non sterile compounding, pharmaceutical purchasing, inventory control, all automated drug dispensing technologies, packaging, and compliance with all Federal, Start and local laws, regulations, and standards.
* Effectively interfaces with pharmacy staff, other health professionals, and pharmaceutical vendors to complete target objectives.
* Possesses expert level knowledge of pharmacy systems as applicable including Pyxis, Cerner, Pharmacy Keeper, Boxpicker, Medportal, Medidose, MILT, C2 Safe, and Anesthesia Pyxis system, and is able to provide troubleshooting on pharmacy systems. Takes initiative to contact appropriate vendors for support if necessary.
* Maintains knowledge of downtime procedures and provides leadership during downtimes.
* Implements and evaluates the use of new technologies, policies, and procedures.
* Ensures appropriate waste control throughout the drug delivery system.
* Performs all administrative functions expected of a Pharmacy Technician 3 with advanced experience and knowledge in these areas.
* Participates in pharmacy leadership activities, such as attending leadership meetings and coordinating with other leaders.

Operations* Assists the Operations Manager in the continued evaluation of the formulary and/or pharmacy resources.

* Assists in supervision of the daily operations of area of pharmacy for which they are responsible and works closely with staff for process and quality improvements.
* Acts as liaison between pharmacy and other departments related to pharmacy drug distribution services.

Compliance/Safety* Stays current and assists pharmacy in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies related to pharmacy operations.

* Ensures all certifications and licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates. Assists in ensuring technician staff maintains current required certifications and licenses.
* Assists in making recommendations and implementing process changes that improve safety and efficiency including those necessary in response to adverse drug events.
* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame. Ensures that technician staff also completed all required job specific training.
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
* Supervises the station check process to ensure all checks are done by staff in the appropriate timeframes.
* Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy law pertaining to the control, monitoring, and distribution of medications including controlled substances.

Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)- Required

Certificates and Licensure

Licensed with State Board of Pharmacy- Required

Certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board- Required

Experience

Minimum two (2) years experience as a pharmacy technician- Required

Tertiary acute care facility experience- Preferred

Supervisory experienced- Preferred

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
