Description
Provides distributive pharmacy services, assistance and support for the registered pharmacist by performing technical aspects of distribution and dispensing of medications. Duties encompass Rx automation process technologies and supervision of pharmacy tech staff, and oversight of pharmacy tech daily operations.

Assists the pharmacist in providing medication, drug information and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel.

Responsible for supervising, organizing, and executing pharmacy technician daily duties; creates work schedules for the pharmacy tech staff; assists with tech duties if needed.

Responsible for oversight of pharmacy automation including dispensing machines, robot, packaging machines, unit dose packaging, refrigerator monitoring systems, pharmacy badge system etc.

Maintains, inspects, and updates crash carts, all specialized pharmacy medication boxes and trays.

Maintains records as required by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and other regulatory agencies, such as, EMS Pharmacy Administration Records, compounding logs, manual pick logs, IV duplicate labels, Robot checks.

Responsible for oversight of the sterile intravenous admixture compounding, including hazardous medications/chemo, all under the direction of a pharmacist.

Schedules all IV hood/chemo hood and room inspections for USP 797/800 compliance.

Directly involved with pharmacy inventory control including medications, supplies, etc.

Performs monthly and biennial controlled substances inventories under the direction of the Director; reports all discrepancies and findings to Director.

Reconciles dispensing machine errors with follow up with staff involved and documentation.

Receives, unpacks, checks quantities against invoices, and puts up medications, IVs, and supplies under proper conditions.

Interviews and orients new associates to the department; maintains tech training manuals; maintains pharmacy tech employee files.

Performs all pharmacy tech performance evaluations; assists with corrective actions needed for pharmacy technicians.

Assists management in designing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and modifying policies and procedures.

Assists management in complying with all laws, regulations, and guidelines set forth by any regulatory agency including but not limited to the Virginia Board of Pharmacy, DEA, FDA, TJC, EPA, etc.

Recognizes inappropriate dosing based in available dosage forms for various age groups to reduce the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Minimum Education

High school diploma or equivalent required

Required Skills

Certifications/Licenses:

Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy required

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Requires flexibility in scheduling and ability to work all shift patterns including week-ends and holidays to insure continuity of care and appropriateness of pharmacy coverage to the patients of Sovah Health Danville on all units.
