Overview

The Operations Supervisor helps oversee the daily operations of the pharmacy to ensure efficient and accurate pharmacy services according to established standards of practice. The Pharmacy Operations Supervisor's responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: strategic planning; designing, managing, and improving the medication-use system; ensuring quality outcomes through performance-improvement activities; leading drug-utilization efforts; optimizing use of information systems and technology; managing the pharmaceutical supply chain, pharmacy department financial operations, and human resources; ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements; and providing institutional representation and leadership. The pharmacy Operations Supervisor fulfills these responsibilities through his or her own actions, proper delegation to competent individuals on his or her staff, and collaborative efforts with other health care professionals.

The Operations Supervisor serves as liaison between support staff, professional staff (pharmacists), pharmacy leadership, and other departments as needed. The Operations Supervisor will work collaboratively with and under the direction of the Pharmacy Operations Manager to systematize processes for a safe, productive, and cost efficient delivery of pharmaceutical care.

Responsibilities

Administrative* Acts as direct supervisor for the pharmacy technician staff. Responsible for evaluation of technician work performance, goal setting, attendance tracking, and performance improvement activities.

* Assists the Operations Manager in coordination of pharmacy department staffing, especially the Pharmacy Technician team, to assure adequate personnel is available for providing pharmacy services.
* Oversees pharmacy technician training and competency testing. Assists with pharmacist training and competency testing, as needed.
* Responsible for technician staff recruitment and retention processes.
* Writes, maintains, reviews, and implements policies and procedures related to the provision of pharmaceutical care.
* Works with System Director and Operations Manager in routine review and evaluation of productivity and budget of department to ensure optimal use of pharmacy resources.
* Effectively interfaces with pharmacy staff, other health professionals, and pharmaceutical vendors to complete target objectives.
* Supports employee/staff engagement initiatives. Serves as a champion of organization culture, influencing culture change to support the NAH values.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Operations* Oversees the evaluation, selection and use of medications on a continuous basis. Assists the Operations Manager in the continued evaluation of effective formulary management and pharmacy resource utilization.

* In conjunction with the Operations Manager, assists in the supervision of the daily operations of the inpatient pharmacy drug distribution system. Works closely with staff for process and quality improvements.
* Acts as liaison between pharmacy and other departments related to pharmacy drug distribution services.
* Helps oversee project planning and implementation relating to drug distribution. Ensures appropriate waste control throughout the drug delivery system.
* Maintains and operationalizes current pharmaceutical care knowledge and awareness of healthcare trends in order to assist in the management of all aspects of the provision of pharmaceutical care.
* Possesses expert level knowledge of pharmacy systems as applicable including CPOE, automated dispensing system, TPN compounder, IV Room workflow system, and dispensing/inventory management systems, and is able to provide troubleshooting on pharmacy systems. Takes initiative to contact appropriate vendors for support if necessary. Implements and evaluates the use of new technologies, as necessary.
* Maintains knowledge of downtime procedures and provides leadership during downtime.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Patient Care* Performs all patient care functions expected of a Clinical Staff Pharmacist with advanced experience and knowledge of central pharmacy operations and technician workflows. Functions as a staff pharmacist when necessary to meet department workload requirements. Regularly works shifts (at least one per month) in order to keep up skills and familiarity with pharmacy operations.

* Provides support and supervision of technician staff in the provision of the pharmacy functions related to their work to ensure safe and efficient pharmacy services.
* Communicates with patient care units and staff to ensure efficient pharmacy services.
* Participates in process improvement to ensure safe and efficient delivery of pharmaceutical services to patients.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Compliance/Safety* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety and security issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe and secure manner. Assists in making recommendations and implementing process changes that improve safety and efficiency including those necessary in response to adverse drug events.

* Stays current and assists pharmacy in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies related to pharmacy operations.
* Demonstrates expertise in the area of sterile compounding and IV room training and safety. Organizes and directs IV room staff, including technicians and pharmacists, to support timely processing, preparation and dispensing of medications and efficient IV room workflow. In collaboration with Operations Manager, ensures Pharmacy department's adherence and implementation of United States Pharmacopeia 797, 795, and 800 standards.
* Ensures all required certifications and licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates. Assists in ensuring technician staff maintains current required certifications and licenses.
* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame. Ensures that technician staff also completed all required job specific training.
* In coordination with the Lead Technician team, supervises the station check process to ensure all checks are done by staff in the appropriate timeframes.
* Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy law pertaining to the control, monitoring, and distribution of medications including controlled substances.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college- Required

PharmD- Preferred

Clinical and or administrative Residency- Preferred

Certificates and Licensure

Current Arizona licensure as a Pharmacist- Required

Experience

Minimum of 2 years tertiary care medical center/health system experience- Required

Minimum of 1 year in an operational supervisory or management role in a 99 bed or larger tertiary care medical center with comparable technologies- Preferred
