Description
Sulfonation and sulfation processes are widely used
in industry to make products such as water-soluble
detergents, emulsifiers and demulsifiers, penetrating and
solubilizing agents, lubricating oil additives and rust inhibitors.
These materials are used in household and commercial
detergent applications, food processing, dyes, cosmetics
manufacturing, metal treating compounds, high detergent
and high based lubricating oils. More recently, oil-soluble
sulfonates have found application in enhanced oil recovery
systems.

The course will discuss, in depth, air/SO3 sulfonation and
sulfation to provide an understanding of the chemistry and
reaction mechanisms involved; the feedstocks and sulfonating
agents available; laboratory, pilot plant and plant equipment
and methods; product isolation and purification, analytical
methods, and safety. In addition, an overview of alternative
sulfonation technologies and relative applications will be
presented and discussed.
