Job Requirements



Education: One of the following options:




  1. Bachelor’s (4 year) degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Special Education, Family and Child Development, or Child Psychology

  2. An Associate’s (2 year) degree in child development or early childhood education

  3. Current certification as a Child Development Associate (CDA) or certified Child Care Professional (CCP) or other Development approved credential

  4. Completion of two years of college education (60 semester credit hours) with at least one college course in child development

  5. Twelve semester hours in college-level credits in child growth and development and/or early childhood education

  6. Completion of a course of training approved by the Department that includes training and work experience with children

  7. Completion of a vocational or occupational education sequence in child growth and development

  8. A current Colorado Level I credential or two three credit college course with one course being Introduction to Early Child hood Education                         



Experience: Coordinated with Education’s options:




  1. 910 hours of verified experience in the care and supervision of four or more children six years of age who are not related to the individual

  2. 9 months (1365 hours) of verified experience as noted in D

  3. Defined by the Department

  4. 12 months (1820 hours) of verified experience as noted in D

  5. 24 months (3640 hours) of verified experience as noted in D



License/Certification:




  • Documentation of group leader qualifications and ability to pass both Central Registry Inquiry and Colorado Bureau of Investigation fingerprint check.

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint check is also required if employee has not lived in Colorado for a year



Other required skills and abilities:




  • Child development knowledge



Physical Abilities:




  • Excellent general health, mobility (including lifting, bending, stooping, reaching) and dexterity sufficient to work with young children, verbal ability to enhance language development in children and effectively communicate with parents.



JOB SUMMARY



A substitute teacher is responsible for the supervision of the children at the Center in accord with the mission of Mercy Employee Child Care Center.  To plan and conduct a program to meet the physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs of each child.   The essential job functions include:



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 



Health and Safety




  • Monitors the welfare, health and safety of all children and reports all situations to the Director. (Optional)               

  • To ensure that routines are carried out in a manner that is prompt, hygienic, and consistent with good child development principles. This includes routines related to removal of shoes, diapering/tolieting, hand washing, cleaning, tooth brushing, eating, and napping.                     

  • To ensure the safety of children through constant supervision, effective arrangement of space, proper maintenance of equipment, and regular practice of fire drills                        

  • To read, understand and be in compliance with all child care licensing standards                 

  • To read, understand and be in compliance with all health department regulations.                            

  • Demonstrates compliance with Catholic Health Initiatives polices and procedures                              



Parent Communication




  • Daily greets each parent and child, communicates with parents through conversations, message boards or forms.  (Optional)          

  • To make an effort to ensure parents receive adequate information about their child’s experiences at the center.                  

  • Parents are consulted in a timely manner whenever a situation arises (i.e. concerns about language development, behavior, etc).                     



Provides a loving atmosphere where a child’s individual needs are met. 




  • To model the language and behaviors we want to see in the children.  To help them learn appropriate words to use and to make good choices               (Optional)          

  • To provide positive, caring guidance to help children develop the ability to be self-disciplined. To never use corporal or harsh punishment, never raise your voice, or be even a little rough with a child, never withholding food                      

  • To try to always put your best side forward for the children, to try to have unlimited patience and kind words.  To carry yourself as if each child’s parent was standing right next to you                 

  • . To be warm, supportive and caring with every child, by responding to their needs quickly and appropriately                                

  • To provide experiences which promote individual self-expression in conversation, imaginative play and creativity, allowing the schedule to vary if the children get interested in something else.

  • To make sure the children get to play inside and outside (weather permitting) each day.                 

  • Children are fed only foods that they are developmentally ready for, that are nutritional and only in amounts that they desire.                               



To assist with executing daily classroom and outdoor activities that promote developmental growth.




  • To assist with carrying out activities on a daily basis, which includes a well-planned schedule that meets the children’s needs and is flexible   (Optional)          

  • . To evaluate the effectiveness of child development activities (lesson plans).  Then make any necessary changes                               

  • To fully utilize the classroom, changing the materials that are available for the children on a regular basis, including the books and displays around the room                            

  • To provide rich learning experiences for the children in all ranges of their development, including new words, animals, places, sounds, thoughts and ideas.                       



Exhibits professionalism




  • To complete the required training hours each year and share the information gained from the trainings and workshops          (Optional)          

  • To read an article, book, chapter or some professional document that interests you and that you can incorporate into your classroom on a monthly basis.  Complete the professional reading review and give to the director to be put in your folder                 

  • To work as a team member to ensure continuity of curriculum and a high standard of quality in all classrooms                                

  • To read and be responsible for the weekly staff memos                  

  • To communicate schedule changes or problems to the Director as soon as possible.                           

  • To be proactive and always help find solutions to problems that arise. To consider the viewpoints of a child, a parent, the Directors and other teachers                               

  • To be reliable and flexible in receiving assignments and adapting to changes in the program                          

  • To be willing to accept supervision in order to improve work performance.                           

  • Personal appearance is suitable for the job                           

  • Most importantly to enjoy your job, to truly enjoy spending your days with the children and here at the Center.
