As part of Merck's Supply Chain organization at the Vaccine Manufacturing facility in Durham NC, the Senior Specialist, Planning and Scheduling will be responsible for the creation of a master production schedule that aligns with the global vaccine forecast and market requirements. Depending on departmental needs, the successful candidate will support the Operations Integrated Process Teams and /or QO Lab scheduling operations by planning workloads in each area. This may include the creation and release of production/process orders for operations, detailed scheduling of lab activities, MES and dilution model creation, procurement of materials to support schedules, and working closely with internal and external suppliers as well as customers to ensure timely deliveries. This position is responsible for monitoring inventory levels at all nodes in the supply chain ensuring sufficient inventory to support manufacturing and testing operations while managing inventory in line with financial targets. This is a senior position in the Durham Supply Chain organization. Candidates will need to possess demonstrated planning skills and experience in an SAP planning environment.

Depending on departmental requirements, position responsibilities will include many of the following:
  • Creates and releases process orders to the shop floor operations team. Leads scheduling meeting, maintains and communicates production schedule. 
  • Supports all relevant Manufacturing Execution System (MES) data entries for 24/7 production facility.
  • Creates dilution models and risk memos as needed to support production plan.
  • Ensures sufficient internally and externally sourced materials are available and released to support all customer demands and downstream processes. 
  • Works closely with the Quality Release Teams in Durham and Westpoint to ensure bulk batches are released and available for production when needed and fill batches are released and available for shipment to customers when needed.
  • Maintains a rolling 18-month site production plan in APO driven off of above–site forecasted demand plan.
  • Works closely with Durham and Westpoint labs to ensure testing and release are aligned with inspection end dates (LROT) and customer need dates (iOTIF).
  • Supply Chain representative, as needed, in support of all IPT meetings and initiatives (i.e. Tier 2, Tier 4, etc…).
  • Active leader in site S&Op meetings and the overall S&Op process
  • Communicates supply delays to downstream colleagues and planning manager.
  • Manages the Inventory of Questionable Value (IQV) process for product set.
  • Reviews the production schedule and MRP outputs; makes adjustments and interacts with supply network planning as required. Manages SAP master data, updating safety stock and reorder points as needed. 
  • Monitors inventory levels to avoid excess inventory, inventory shortages and/or inventory expiry.
  • Provides support of the annual profit planning and budgeting process. 
  • Provides quality notification (QN) and corrective action preventive action (CAPA) support as needed
  • Maintains existing process to ensure all batch testing is completed on time to meet customer expectations. This includes VMF and VBF batch testing, ID testing requirements from the Wilson packaging site and raw material testing performed in a Merck network lab or at a contract lab that supports Merck.
  • Maintains tracking process / mechanism to manage all samples passing through the Durham lab or diverted to West Point or another lab in or outside of the Merck network. Serves as primary scheduling liaison between Durham Production, Planning and Quality.
  • Develops and updates Planning procedures as needed.
  • Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others when priorities need to change.
  • Serves as primary liaison between Durham Lab, West Point Lab and the Durham site with regard to scheduling and tracking all batch testing statuses (in lab, on test, off test, etc…). 
  • Reviews MRP outputs and makes adjustments as required
  • Monitors inventory levels to avoid excess inventory, inventory shortages and/or inventory expirations 
  • Works closely with above-site Global Supply Network Planning Hub and Durham site planners to support all aspects of Durham demands for bulk virus from Westpoint. This includes bulk virus can check-in and spreadsheet entry.
  • Responsible for working closely with all testing labs and VMF 101/102 planners to schedule and communicate lots/quantities/ship dates for finished product to all customers ensuring WCS OTIF targets are achieved.
  • Utilizes Lean Six Sigma principles and methodologies to minimize waste, reduce costs and shorten cycle times
Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Quality, or comparable discipline
Required:
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in Planning, Supply Chain, Quality, Materials Management, and/or Operations
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a GMP regulated environment
  • Strong knowledge of Planning and Purchasing processes as well as MRP/MPS principles and methodologies
  • Strong experience using SAP 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) 
  • Excellent planning, organizational, documentation and communication skills to ensure alignment of customers’ needs relative to site output
  • Capable of managing and reevaluating the production plan under very dynamic circumstances
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team and manage complex projects and tasks 
  • Ability to produce/complete various assignments requiring analytical ability, independent judgment, creativity and problem solving skills
Preferred:
  • Experience in sterile vaccine manufacturing industry
  • APICS or CPIM certification
  • Lean Six Sigma Knowledge and Experience
  • Team player with a strong positive attitude to maintain focus in difficult problem solving situations
