Scope of Position:

Focus will be leading the technical concept and development of robust, first / next generation process machine systems that provide significant competitive advantage to Corning’s businesses, and / or enable new products and product lines (prototype and production capable machines).

This position will support some or all of Corning Incorporated’s divisions. The individual will lead multi discipline, cross-functional project teams working on early stage innovation projects, through concept generation / certification, technology development, detail design / build, and start-up in manufacturing.

 

Role within group:

• Individual will be responsible to lead and influence the technical direction of multi discipline, cross-functional project teams working on early innovation stage projects, through concept generation / certification, technology development, detail design / build, and start-up in manufacturing.

• High level of technical knowledge and curiosity that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges.

• High level of fundamental understanding of the process and materials to enable the development of cost effective products and machine systems.

• Ability to lead and work in a multi discipline, cross-functional team based environment with a highly matrixed project team.

• Understand how to integrate custom and commercially available technologies and processes to enable Corning, Inc. to develop into robust next generation process equipment solutions.

• Ability to effectively leverage external custom machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of early, mid and later stages of machine system implementation.

• Be responsible for the overall technical, functional and operational integrity of concept, design, estimating costs, defining project scope, budget and schedule.

• Be responsible for identification of project resources necessary to complete the project tasks and coordinate the project teams efforts towards successfully achieving overall project objectives.

 

 Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Interface and work with the Research, Development and Manufacturing leadership involved in the innovation and manufacture of new products and machine systems for any of Corning’s Divisions including Science and Technology (R&D).

• Focus will be on leading and influencing the technical direction for the concept, design and analysis of first generation /next generation process machine systems for robustness of design.

• Work with other project team members on solving difficult mechanical engineering related problems, understanding project related issues, and general process engineering and process understanding.

• Utilize internal lab facilities and equipment to develop proof of concept prototypes.

• Interface with outside suppliers on specifying and procuring various precision products, fixture and machine components to support the projects they are involved in.

• Individual must investigate prior art and document any Intellectual Property developed as part of their project activities.

• Individual must document project results through internal reporting means.

• Individual must present the project(s) they are involved with for review by peers, customers and senior technical managers.

• Work as a team member/advisor during the development of new process equipment systems with system integrators and/or external sub-contractors.

• Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements and standards.

• Maintain records and track expenditures against allocated funds. Estimate time required to accomplish tasks and monitor performance against schedules.

• Individual must be capable of executing project assignments with minimal supervision.

• Individual will be expected to work in a High Performance Work Team environment.

• Some project travel is expected and will depend upon the project portfolio

 

Projects involved with:

• Development of robust, cost effective first/next generation machine systems and product designs that provide significant competitive advantage to Corning’s businesses, and / or enable new products and product lines. The individual will be responsible to lead the technical direction of cross-functional project teams, on early innovation stage projects, through concept generation / certification, technology development, detail design / build, and start-up in manufacturing. The applications will vary from using standard commercial equipment to developing new custom machines/mechanisms or combination of both.

 

Travel Requirements:

Estimated travel at 10% - 30% depending upon specific project assignment. Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up as well as for routine interaction with internal and external Customers and Suppliers.

 

 

Education and Experience:

• B.S. / M.S. / Ph.D. in a Technical Discipline

• 8-10 years in a technical field to include: - Process, Equipment or Product Development or Engineering - Project or Engineering Management - Project Level Supervisory Experience - Technology or Product Transfer (preferred)

 

 

Required Skills:

• Experience in successful development and delivery of new products or fully integrated, first/next generation process machine systems through early stages of innovation and into manufacturing.

• Strong technical knowledge in the areas of mechanical and process engineering and product design.

• Technical understanding in the areas of automation, precision engineering skills, metrology, materials, finishing, controls, measurements and numerical analysis / modeling.

• Demonstrated project leadership experience with ability to achieve results through technical leadership and influence of highly matrixed project teams, champion new ideas, lead by example and provide constructive feedback to co-workers

• Ability to effectively manage highly ambiguous situations and effectively demonstrate leadership in assigned early stage projects that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges.

• Strong technical leadership and experience with projects requiring development of fundamental process understanding and requirements.

• Ability to interface with senior management and provide clear concise program strategies, technical updates, resources needs, and program updates.

• Understand how to integrate custom and commercially available technologies and processes such as robotics, material addition and removal, dispensing, and automation equipment into robust process manufacturing solutions.

• Ability to effectively leverage external machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of later stages of machine system implementation.

• Ability to apply decision making and problem solving skills to review facts and weigh options using a systematic approach to solve problems.

• Individual must have excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills.
