Shift: Evenings (Monday-Friday 2:30p-11:00p

Position Summary

Operates and maintains stationary engines and mechanical equipment, compressors, generators, and steam boilers, to provide for utilities such as light, heat and power for refrigeration, air conditioning, and other services for the hospital. Other responsibilities include those of general maintenance (e.g. electrical, plumbing, equipment maintenance and safety testing). Will provide excellent customer services when working with patients, visitors and other staff members. Works under minimal supervision and mentors/coaches less experienced facilities staff.

Minimum Education Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED

  • Technical degree/certificate in a facilities related field, preferred

Minimum Experience Requirements

  • Five years minimum experience in maintenance, operation and repair of building mechanical systems; including but not limited to boilers, liquid chillers, pumps, fans and air handling units, heat exchangers, and ancillary equipment.

  • Knowledge with medical gas systems including medical air pumps, medical vacuum pumps, bulk oxygen, nitrous oxide and nitrogen and backup systems.

  • Knowledge with Building Automation Systems and Computerized Maintenance Management systems

  • Hospital facilities or healthcare construction experience, preferred

  • Previous leadership experience, preferred

  • Strong communication skills; ability to read, write and speak English

  • Basic computer skills


  • Stationary Engineer, Boiler Operator Class A & B, CFC and/or Journeyman certification preferred

  • Technical certifications preferred

  • Valid state driver’s license

Position Duties (Essential Functions)


  • Regularly starts stops and adjusts or regulates equipment as necessary to properly condition the facility.*

  • Observes meters and gauges, manipulates valves and machinery to keep readings within the specified requirements.*

  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain, operate, and change parameters and messages on the HVAC computer system to maintain proper comfort conditions.*

  • Responsible for coordinating scheduled maintenance. *

  • Performs preventive maintenance of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment by using established departmental procedures assuring minimized equipment failure.*

  • Determines time and materials for new equipment installation and remodels.*

  • Reads and interprets blue prints for installation of new equipment and repairs of existing equipment.*

  • Performs routine maintenance, lubrication, cleaning of boilers and central plant equipment on a daily basis.*

  • Accurately computes heat loads and cooling requirements for projects. *

  • Repairs and maintains valves, showers, toilets, water heaters and other plumbing fixtures, and opens clogged drains. *

  • Repairs, replaces and tests electrical circuits, equipment and appliances using appropriate tools and testing instruments.*

  • Performs a variety of general maintenance, repair, overhaul and construction duties. *

  • Performs minor electrical and plumbing repairs. *

  • Inspects and performs repairs on Life Safety components (i.e.; fire/smoke wall, doors, exit corridors, exit stairs, & chute doors). *

  • Regularly removes water samples and applies chemical tests to determine water make-up and properly applies chemicals as needed. *

  • Recognize and correct unsafe practices and conditions as needed. *

  • Accurate completion of preventive maintenance and routine inspections. *

  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures and meets all applicable codes. *

  • Comprehensive understanding of equipment operation, building systems, emergency procedures and the ability to successfully provide service as needed. *

  • Selects and requisitions materials and hardware for completion of work. *

  • Manages costs, schedules, and acquisition of supplies for projects. *

  • Asks appropriately for assistance from other facilities staff, supervisor and manager. *

  • Ability to manage projects as assigned. *

  • Ability to provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours per department and/or facility policy. *

Customer Services

  • Prioritizes work and responds quickly to request for assistance. *

  • Demonstrates the ability to address quality issues and customer satisfaction using care, courtesy and cooperation with guests, staff and community members. *

  • Communicates with manager, supervisor and other facilities staff regarding problems and opportunities, responding positively to feedback. *

  • Assists others to support department tasks and projects as needed. *

  • Participates effectively in team settings and able to work independently. *


  • Responsible for accurate and timely completion of documentation in Computer Maintenance Management System i.e., work orders, equipment, and area records.*

  • Maintain records of equipment maintenance ensuring quality standards and compliance. *

  • Maintains work areas in a neat and orderly manner and leaves general area clean after completion of work order. *

  • Effectively organizes and prioritizes work during the shift. *

  • Demonstrated willingness to work/learn all other relevant facilities areas. *

  • Utilizes training in performance of job duties and to facilitate personal growth.


  • Provides training and coaching to facilities staff. *

  • Provides support to facilities staff for hands-on day to day operations, directing resources as necessary.*

  • Acts as a liaison between facilities supervisor/manager and other facilities staff reporting problems and opportunities as needed.*

  • May participate in the interviewing and selection process. *

  • May provide feedback to leadership for performance evaluations and corrective action. *

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy Work - exert/lift up to 100 lbs force occasionally, and/or 50 lbs frequently, and/or 20 lbs constantly
