Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Senior Controls Engineer


Scope of Position:

  • Senior Controls Engineer will analyze user requirements, process design, and mechanical equipment design to create controls architecture for automated systems.
  • Work closely with engineers and technicians to define and perform experiments to develop process technologies and solutions.
  • Collaboration with internal and external subject matter experts.
  • Application of machine vision technologies and controls theory to solve challenging process control and monitoring problems.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to translate process requirements into controls designs and methodologies to ensure process quality.
  • Produce appropriate documentation of controls architecture to facilitate clear communication of requirements to internal and external resources.
  • Interface with vendors to select or develop components that meet the needs of the equipment under development.
  • Perform debugging and modification of new and existing equipment to facilitate development activities.
  • Develop robust code that delivers desired functionality from equipment under development.
  • Creation and modification of machine vision programs on automated systems.
  • Specification, selection, and integration of machine vision hardware and software.
  • Work with mechanical designers and controls technicians to resolve issues and guide best practices.
  • Coordinate with internal and external controls resources to ensure that hardware, software, and the related documentation stay in sync via appropriate change management tools and processes.
  • Design and implement test plans to validate that equipment meets functional requirements and prepare written reports summarizing findings.
  • Perform safety analyses and compliance assessments via identification of key risks and issues in order to comply with applicable standards, policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Plan and direct the activities of controls resources (both internal and external) to maximize efficiency during equipment development.


Travel Requirements:

•             25% on average depending on the project requirements.  Includes international travel.


Required Skills:

  • Experience working directly with, and providing requirements to integration partners on automation projects.
  • Experience with specification, installation, and programming of machine vision systems.
  • Experience in producing detailed definitions and associated documentation of controls system architecture.
  • Experience writing controls logic and configuring controls networks.
  • Experience producing controls systems that interface with SCADA and MES systems.
  • Experience in performing machine safety analyses.
  • Experience in the preparation of controls drawings using AutoCAD software (or similar)
  • Experience in designing experiments and writing test plans.
  • Excellent project management skills (planning, resource management, conflict resolution, able to meet deadlines).
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making skills demonstrated by the use of advanced data analysis.


Desired Skills:

  • Allen-Bradley controls hardware and programming
  • Omron controls hardware and programming.
  • Structured text programming.
  • C++ application development.
  • Experience working with large, geographically diverse project teams.
  • Experience in the fiber optic industry.


Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • Seven years of experience in development of automated systems


Soft Skills:

  • Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint).
  • General understanding of computer operating systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external resources.
  • Ability to clearly express technical ideas and adapt for non-technical audiences.
  • All main communication is in English
  • High initiative, able to work with minimal direction.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within diverse teams.
