To help meet the growing demand for our treatments, Novo Nordisk expects to double production of diabetes and obesity drugs over the next decade. We are currently building a new 825,000 sq. ft diabetes Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) plant in Clayton, NC next to our existing “fill and finish” manufacturing facility. Our new $2 billion API facility is expected to be operational in 2020, with 700 full-time employees responsible for the fermentation, recovery and purification of insulin and GLP1 ingredients. This once in a life-time career opportunity is ideal for pharmaceutical manufacturing professionals who not only understand the operational complexities of manufacturing but also have the desire and drive to help us design, build and validate our processes. Here, you will work with the best manufacturing professionals in the industry, while learning and taking part in the plant design.

Position Purpose:

To contribute to the development of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) processes/systems for the new API facility. Activities to include writing/ reviewing specifications, participating in process hazard evaluations, SOP development, safety programs development & training. Provide leadership & support in attaining a safe working environment, provide direct support for the project, technical direction for Safety Professionals & maintain & report safety data. Ensure positive working relationship with internal & external teams & alignment/collaboration with Corporate Health & Safety groups. Once established, drive the safety processes for DAPI-US.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide technical direction to site personnel as it relates to management of safety processes, working in high hazard environments, & ensuring safety compliance.
  • Coordinate industrial hygiene programs to ensure compliance to applicable exposure limits.
  • Follow & champion all safety & environmental requirements in the performance of duties.
  • Creation & implementation of safety programs.
  • Support Project execution & compliance through risk assessments (FMEA, HazOp), development of corrective actions & coordination of improvements.
  • Provide safety expertise & solutions to all managers & projects aspects for resolving known or potential issues.
  • Provide safety training & tools for the core processes to improve safety performance.
  • Communicate safety performance statistics on a monthly/weekly basis.
  • Review all recordable accidents & coach root cause analyses, corrective & preventive actions for assigned departments.
  • Provide back up for emergency management/fire systems.
  • Increase the awareness of safety through various communication tools.
  • Other accountabilities as assigned.

Requires Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in safety.
  • BA/BS in Environmental Health & Safety, Safety Management, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of OSHAS 18001/ISO45001
  • Industrial Hygiene
  • Full knowledge of OSHA regulations including process safety management (PSM), Industrial Hygiene & Chemical Management
  • Emergency Management / planning knowledge & experience
  • Good communication & writing skills

Desired/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong skills in root cause analysis for analyzing accidents & process incidents
  • Worker’s Compensation Management
  • Classified electrical environments
  • Pharmaceutical experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of fire detection/suppression/prevention systems

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally moves equipment and/or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds within the facility.
  • Routinely operates & inspects manufacturing equipment using hands.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Constantly positions self to transfer materials within manufacturing environment. Frequently moves about the building to access other personnel & operational areas.
  • Corrected vision to 20/30 and/or ability to pass vision screening assessment necessary to procurement motorized vehicle license.
  • Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder to service equipment. Works atop elevated positions at heights.
  • Occasionally required to secure a motorized vehicle license & operate a motorized vehicle.
  • Occasionally works around odorous and/or hazardous materials.
  • Occasionally performs critical job functions in extremely cold work environments.
  • Occasionally positions self within confined spaces for inspection, repair & maintenance of equipment.
  • Able to work in loud noise environments with hearing protection.
  • Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Occasionally required to wear a respirator to perform job duties. May be required to be clean shaven & pass a medical clearance for respiratory protection use.
  • Able to travel internationally, up to 10% of the time.
  • Able to work in an open office environment with the possibility of frequent distraction.
  • Able to work the hours necessary to support a 24/7 continuous manufacturing operation.
