Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Combines the perspective of mechanical and stress field analysis with the understanding of material properties and builds on improving measurement equipment to collect data for the analysis. Key understanding of the optical principles behind the measurements will be vital to insure proper application and reporting of results. Use the principles and theories of science and engineering, especially utilizing mathematics and physics, to provide technical support to engineers involved in the application of optical and electro-optical systems and components. Works on assignments that are complex in nature where considerable judgment and initiative are required in resolving problems and making recommendations. Person utilizes key understanding of the optical principles behind the measurements to insure proper application and reporting of results.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities: Full range of responsibilities include, hands-on measurements, analysis of raw data and analytical application of mechanical models as well as, planning experiments and developing / designing improvements to equipment and processes. Day to day activities include: • Interact with Corning “internal” customers to determine best techniques to help them achieve their goal to better understand a process or solve a problem • Communication: face-to-face; presentations; e-mail • Interact with lab technicians in SMaM and other Corning labs • Develop / improve / document : processes / methodologies / equipment

 

Travel requirements (please note if international): <10%, possibly international

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hrs a week, flex-time available

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration): PhD or Masters with relevant work experience

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess): • Working understanding of polarized light to measure stress in glass, retardation, Stokes Vector, Mueller Matrix • Working understanding of mechanics of stress fields, Mohr's circle, Cauchy stress tensor • Working understanding of Glass properties, Stress Optic Coefficient, CTE, Young’s Modulus, Poisson’s Ratio • Working use of MS Office tools, Word, Power Point, Excel • Excellent communication skills

 

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess): • Basic Optical systems understanding, field of view, magnification, depth of field, circle of confusion • Advanced Excel, indirect references, lookup, pivot tables • Computer Programming (Dot Net, LabView) • Electronic Circuits (read schematics)

 

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership): • Quick Study, loves to learn • Must work well with others on the team and Corning • Teaching / Team Leading
