Responsibilities and expectations: Senior Project Engineer responsible for developing new and/or improved optical fibers.

• Conceive of novel fiber designs, including refractive index profiles and composition, and associated manufacturing processes that provide advantaged attributes and/or cost.

• Work on cross-functional teams, including commercial functions, and collaborate with process and equipment experts within and outside the development organization(s)

• Design and direct experimentation and modeling to demonstrate value of new fiber designs; analyze data, generate conclusions, and make recommendations. The work location for this assignment is in Corning, NY

 

Education and Experience: PhD in Electrical or Optics Engineering field (or similar) and >8 yrs experience, including practical experience in optical fiber research and development

 

Required Knowledge / Skills:

• Optical fiber profile design for delivering targeted optical attributes

• Low loss and Ultra low loss fiber design and manufacturing processes

• Bend insensitive fiber designs, compositions and manufacturing processes

• Modeling predictions for fiber attributes

• Halide doping during sintering of optical fiber preforms

• Optical transmission system testing and analysis

 

Desired Skills:

• Ability to work interactively on cross functional teams with ties to R&D and Manufacturing.

• Demonstrated problem solving skills • Ability to design and carry out experiments

• Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously

• Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
