Job Summary

Under overall supervision of the Director, Research Safety Programs, the Senior Manager Research Safety, is responsible for management of Research Safety activities for the research operations of CHOP’s Research Institute. Oversees policy development and implementation for the biological, chemical and laboratory safety programs. Manages workflow and oversees policy development for the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).Supervises the daily operations and professional development of the Safety Specialists (Biological and Chemical) and the IBC Analyst. Coordinates on-call schedule for the Research Safety 24/7 emergency response support. Leads continuous quality improvement initiatives for the research safety programs under the position’s areas of responsibility to ensure programs are in compliance with applicable regulations, guidances, policies and procedures; are customer-service oriented; and are implemented in an efficient way to support the research and enterprise strategies.

Job Responsibilities

Laboratory Safety

  •  Conducts laboratory visits and clearly documents findings related to work performed.
  •  Prepares and maintains detailed reports and records.
  •  Provides written and oral feedback on findings.
  •  Assists with development of recommended actions to achieve compliance.
  •  Participates in third party audits and inspections.
  • Revises educational programs to reflect findings of laboratory surveys, changes in policy, procedure or regulations or outcome of incident investigations.

Program Leadership

  •  Works closely with the Director, Research Safety Programs to develop programs in the following areas:

                     - Biological Safety

                    - Chemical Safety

                    - Laboratory Safety

                    - Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) program

  •   Provides supervision to Safety Specialists and IBC Analyst.
  •  Provides recommendations for development of new or revision of existing policies.

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

Program Development

  •  Creates and maintains standard operating procedures and templates for conducting routine laboratory audits.
  • Identifies areas for which increased education and/or oversight are needed.
  •  Develops and maintain internal reports needed to monitor compliance trends.
  •  Monitors federal, state and local regulatory changes pertaining to research safety.
  •  Measures effectiveness of training programs.


Supervision and Staffing:

  • Directs the work priorities of the Safety Specialist and IBC Analyst positions through development of annual goals and priorities.
  •  Supervises and provides guidance to Safety Specialists and IBC Analyst to ensure accuracy and quality of work.
  •  Responds to and investigates laboratory accidents and incidents.
  •  Performs follow-up investigations to determine cause of incident; recommends preventive measures.
  •  Responds to spills and emergencies 24 hours/day; 7 days a week including participation in a rotating on-call emergency response schedule.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene or other scientific field


Required Experience: At least five (5) years’ experience in a management role in an area related to biological or chemical safety.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Master’s degree

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations:

  • Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP)
  • Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP)
  •  Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  •  Certified Safety Professional (CSP) 
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  •  24 or 40 hour HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations) certification

Additional Technical Requirements

  •  Experience conducting safety audits in a research setting.
  • Ability to understand and address clinical research compliance issues in an academic health setting.
  •  Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to at least two of the following: biological safety, chemical safety, industrial hygiene, and IBC/”NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules”.
  •  Excellent oral communication skills
