Position in Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) Trade Compliance Operations ensuring US imports are cleared through US Customs (CBP) and released by other Partner Government Agencies (PGA). This will involve creating and providing import clearance instructions for Merck MRL US imports compliantly following Global Trade Compliance (GTC) and local standards in a timely manner without impacting clinical supply and R&D studies. This role will include import planning activities prior to shipment as well as transactional entry activities aligned with US Customs, FDA, USDA, FWS, CDC, and other Partner Government Agencies (PGA) requirements.  Position will work with Global Trade Compliance (GTC), MRL Trade Operations, site shipping personnel and Clinical and Research stakeholders and constituents across all US Merck locations.  Position will also interact with Logistics, Transportation, Clinical Country Operations overseas, and outside vendors/shippers. Key challenges will include influencing all constituents and stakeholders to following trade policy and procedures and solving shipment specific import issues when they arise.


  • Import planning – Review import request information and shipping documents to ensure compliance with GTC global standards and local import Standard Business Practices
  • Ensure all required trade attributes required by US Customs and PGAs are complete in our Global Trade Management system, and generate import broker clearance instructions which are provided to our brokers for entry submission in the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) system
  • Work with GTC COE group to obtain HTS classifications and FDA Product Code assignments
  • Work within our MRL Trade Operations Import Standard Business Practices and align with policy set by Global Trade Compliance
  • Influence external stakeholders to comply with Standard Business Practices developed by MRL Trade Operations
  • Support U.S. shipping sites with U.S. import transaction challenges
  • Contribute to special projects and assignments related to international trade as needed



  • Bachelor degree or equivalent in years of experience in Trade Compliance required


  • Minimum of 3 years functional expertise with international trade or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of US Customs Import regulations and related experience
  • Prior experience interfacing with international companies 
  • Prior hands-on experience using Microsoft products (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word) 


  • Trade related certificate or Customs Broker License desirable
  • Prior experience with global trade management systems like SAP GTS or Integration Point, or similar databases, very desirable.
