Senior Scientist- Vegetable Seeds 




The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Scientist – Vegetable Seeds, are to: 


  • Identifies opportunities for innovation, ensure new key state of the art technologies (through development, collaboration or in licensing), procedures and products are available, keep up-to-date with respect to fast changing scientific developments as well as analyze potential impacts and implement new technologies and procedures within the research program;
  • Designs and conducts complex research projects and contributes to the development of efficient and effective research methods and techniques, publications, intellectual property or trade secrets to create added value for R&D, and other Divisions and enable the sound translation of laboratory to implementation;
  • Initiate and participate in external research projects with other companies and universities and monitor activities of competitors in order to ensure a good competitive position for Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seeds;
  • Advise, propose, communicate and inform the Regional Head of Technology Development regarding the long term and short term research opportunities by means of drawing up proposals, reports, reviews, research manuals and feedback about the research program and the achieved process in order to facilitate, advise and enable divisional and management decision making;
  • Design, formulate and recommend, in cooperation with R&D, Operations, and M&S and after approval of the Regional Head of Technology Development implement and monitor the research policy in line with the research strategy in order to ensure realization of the research goals;
  • Propose and formulate research goals in cooperation with R&D, Operations, and M&S and after approval of the Regional Head of Technology Development implement, manage, steer and direct the goals within the research team in line with the long term and short term research policy in order to control and secure the realization of the research goals;
  • Aligns activities to broad business objectives;
  • Design the operational plan for the research team and prepare, check and control within approved research budgets;
  • Analyze discrepancies in realization and budget within the guidelines of research and check the realization of the budget in order to ensure a correct and optimal realization of the research team budget and control research costs;
  • Direct, coordinate, support, train, monitor and advise the research team and research related activities in line with the research policy, guidelines and procedures and corporate values and vision within Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seed in order to ensure an efficient and effective operating research team. In time, this can be extended with H/R management responsibilities;
  • Identify and propose research projects in cooperation with R&D, Operations, and M&S to the Regional Head of Technology Development and after approval formulate detailed project plans and recommend priorities as well as audit and troubleshoot as an expert professional, communicate, provide information and present results and reports and plan direct accurate action in case of highly important and urgent ad hoc projects with tight deadlines in order to achieve the agreed quality standards, time planning and budgets and ensure a successful research project;
  • Designs strategies to optimize current Cell Biology methods and lead to technical innovation;
  • Manage stakeholders and ensure company support for Cell Biology activities;
  • The Sr. Scientist works in a dynamic team and mentors peers/colleagues in areas of expertise.

Required Qualifications:


  • PhD in Cell/Molecular Biology, Genetics, Plant Biology or related area with minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or;
  • MS in Cell/Molecular Biology, Genetics, Plant Biology or related area with minimum of 8 years of relevant experience or; 
  • BS in Cell/Molecular Biology, Genetics, Plant Biology or related area with minimum of 10 years of relevant experience;
  • Working experience in Gene Editing, In-Vitro Cell and / or Reproductive Biology;
  • Supervises scientific personnel through project management and coaching and contributes to research projects, technologies, publications, intellectual property, or trade secrets;
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge in the research field;
  • Strong communication skills and adept at working in multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Excellent project management skills with respect to content, stakeholder management and team member management W;
  • Ability and passion to network with Bayer and academic Scientists;
  • Demonstrates creativity in problem solving and challenges the status quo;
  • Affinity with and / or knowledge of the technologies used in Cell/Molecular Biology, Plant Biology,  Plant Breeding and Seed Industry;
  • Language skills: English.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Desirable experience in vegetable crops, management and budgeting, project management, organization/planning and reporting.
