Merck Research Laboratories Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metabolism (PPDM) Department has a Senior Scientist level position available in West Point, PA for a highly talented and motivated individual.  This opportunity will involve using innovative technologies to investigate the distribution of therapeutic agents in preclinical species through the application of various ex vivo methods including autoradiography, mass spectrometry imaging techniques, histological methods, and fluorescence imaging. In this role, the candidate will be expected to design and conduct experiments, interpret results, and share data with cross-functional teams.  Routine work will include preparing tissue samples, conducting imaging experiments, analyzing and summarizing data, and communicating with project teams. This role involves working within a high energy and cross-functional team to support issue-driven studies within discovery and development. The candidate should have the ability to work independently as well as collaborate with internal and external groups effectively.  



  • Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years relevant experience OR a Master’s degree with 4+ years relevant experience, OR a Ph.D. Appropriate subjects for highest degree include biochemistry, chemistry, pharmacology or chemical engineering.


  • Ex vivo tissue imaging experience using autoradiography and/ or mass spectrometry.
  • Experience with histological staining, IHC method development, and microscopy.
  • Pharmacokinetic (PK) experience or training.
  • Track record of innovative problem solving and method development.
  • Strong verbal and excellent written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and image analysis software.
  • Must be willing to work with ionizing radiation (3H, 14C, 35S).


  • Quantitative Whole Body Autoradiography (QWBA) experience.
  • Hands-on microautoradiography (MARG) experience. 
  • Tissue cryo-sectioning skills.
  • Mass spectrometry skill-set (quantitative bioanalysis, metabolite identification, and/ or MS imaging).
  • Knowledge and/ or expertise in other ex vivo or in vivo imaging modalities.
