The Analytical Commercialization and Technology – API group has a Senior Scientist position available at the Rahway, NJ site.  The Senior Scientist position is a laboratory-based scientific track role in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment. The role is tasked with solving high complexity analytical problems related to the development  and validation of API manufacturing processes for the commercialization of Merck’s innovative drug products.  

The incumbent will be expected to interact closely with internal development partners and with internal and external sites in the Merck Manufacturing network in identifying, implementing, and troubleshooting laboratory test methods and workflows as well as material for ensuring compliant, robust, and responsive supply. The individual will have a deep understanding of the regulatory and business environment and needs related to API development and commerical supply and provide critical analytical support to ensure Merck’s success.



  • Bachelors Degree in Chemistry or related discipline with a minimum of seven (7) years of relevant pharmaceutical development experience
  • Masters Degree in Chemistry or related discipline with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant pharmaceutical development experience 
  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry or related discipline


  • Strong chemistry knowledge 
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability including the abilility to perform investigations with strong technical troubleshooting skills and assist in developing/implementing CAPAs
  • Have working knowledge of developing, validating, and troubleshooting  various analytical techniques (e.g., chromatography, spectroscopy, Karl Fischer)
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changes and develop appropriate plans for managing risks.


  • Ability to provide documentation/technical input during inspections and audits (Regulatory and Internal) and have a working knowledge of data integrity
  • Have working knowledge of API development and commercialization and understand the needs related to drug product
  • Have experience working with CMO’s and CRO’s
  • Have working knowledge of CMC filing requirements for API
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with flexibility and sensitivity in dealing with different cultures
  • Self motivated to raise and take ownership and accountability of issues and drive them to resolution.
