Senior Engineer Instrument, Electrical & Controls 




The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Engineer, are to: 


  • Provide IEC (instrumentation, electrical, controls) / PCT (process control technology) engineering and leadership services for the preparation and execution of IEC/PCT portions of projects for manufacturing facilities;
  • Develop independently process control strategies and alarm and information management;
  • Review and approve IEC/PCT requirements and develop documentation for I&E/PCT;
  • Direct teams to analyze and define IEC/PCT requirements and to perform actual configuration and testing of control systems;
  • Participate in all preliminary and process safety reviews with particular emphasis on PCT systems and equipment, interlocking, alarming, safety systems, etc.;
  • Direct designers, contractors, vendors, and technicians from conceptual design through construction and commissioning of IEC/PCT systems;
  • Generate all hardware and software documentation required to procure, configure, test, install and maintain the IEC/PCT systems;
  • Interface with other engineering disciplines, designers, operations, and maintenance personnel as necessary to achieve project objectives;
  • Responsible for cost and schedule within assigned area of responsibility;
  • Develop alternative solutions to problems, handles complex problems independently;
  • Demonstrate strong technical expertise and ability to adapt to changing circumstances;
  • Display flexibility with assignments in different units/plants;
  • Application of new technology;
  • Proper application of standards and guidelines especially related to IEC/PCT documentation, configuration conventions, and testing;
  • Identification of customer’s requirements and negotiation of the best cost/benefit solution;
  • Enforcing standards and policies/procedures and submitting deviations when required;
  • Special studies to evaluate new equipment or engineering tools for the project or PCT department;
  • Functional safety related to IEC61511 and ISA84 will be applied in the execution of most IEC projects in this role;
  • Report administratively to the Engineering & Technology IEC / PCT Group Head or assigned designate;
  • Report functionally for large projects to the PCT lead engineer or to the respective Project Manager;
  • Can be functionally responsible for other Bayer and/or contract engineers, designers, or programmers as a project or assignment related activity;
  • Participation in special committees and study groups both at the plant level and corporate level may be assigned to the incumbent;
  • Work closely with project and process engineers, mechanical and piping engineers, PCT area engineers, production and safety personnel, purchasing department and vendors / suppliers;
  • Technical assistance is provided to the construction department and a presence in the field during construction and commissioning activities may be necessary.

Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree and 6 years of experience; M.S. and 4 years; PhD and 2 years;
  • Bachelor degree from an accredited university in Electrical, Chemical, or Electromechanics engineering with strong interest in control and/or power systems;
  • Experience in pharmaceutical, chemical, or industrial facilities in IEC/PCT design and engineering or equivalent experience;
  • Excellent knowledge of IEC documentation, automation validation, quality assurance, etc.;
  • Excellent knowledge of process control strategies and systems;
  • Excellent knowledge of building automation and safety systems and industrial control networks;
  • Strong computer hardware and software skills;
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant national and international standards in the area of process control, low voltage electrical, and instrumentation;
  • Knowledge of project control skills including project planning, scheduling, cost control, and contract development;
  • Experience in providing field support and participating in check out, commissioning, and start-up of process control installations;
  • Systematic approach to problem definition and solution development;
  • Ability to work as a member of cross-functional teams and to participate in multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills to deal with people at different levels of management, engineering and design, and with internal customers (e.g. engineering, maintenance, operations) and suppliers of IEC/PCT material and services;
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in order to communicate with and obtain cooperation from team members involved with engineering, design, check out, commissioning and start-up;
  • Demonstrated ability to write comprehensive technical and scope documents required for project execution;
  • Business-proficiency of oral and written English language;
  • Willingness and availability to travel 20 - 50% depending on project or business needs;
  • General understanding of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) requirements and responsibilities.

  • Professional registration and/or certification as appropriate.
