Description

Regeneron's Structural Biology group is seeking a PhD-level scientist. In this role you will employ cryo-electron microscopy as well as X-ray crystallography of molecules in Regeneron's drug development pipeline, including membrane proteins, large multi-protein assemblies, and antibody-target complexes. This is a tremendous opportunity for an individual to contribute to projects of real medical impact.

A Typical Day In the Role of Scientist Might Look Like:

This work will involve many of the stages of a structural biology project, from protein characterization and complex purification, to crystallization and/or EM grid preparation, data collection, data processing, structure determination and refinement. Earlier stages such as cloning, protein expression, and protein purification will be carried out by other groups at Regeneron, but we will still be involved, e.g. when special protein constructs are required for the structural studies. We would like the candidate to have experience in all of these areas, as well as the ability to provide clear guidance to collaborators if the work is not done in our group. However, we recognize that very few candidates will have a full set of skills in both crystallography and cryoEM, and we are able to provide training in either technique where necessary.

This position is intended to be cross-disciplinary, using either cryo-EM or X-ray crystallography, or a combination of both techniques, to produce the most useful results for a given project. Not all projects will require a high-resolution structure, and one of the major challenges of this work will be to plan out experiments that can be executed rapidly and deliver structural data quickly enough to remain relevant for the larger drug development effort.

We have extensive resources for crystallographic and EM structure determination in house, including a Titan Krios cryo-electron microscope with K3 detector, a Glacios microscope that will be upgraded to a Falcon 4 detector later this year, synchrotron beamtime on ALS beamline 5.0.2, and protein purification, crystallization, and biophysical characterization equipment. The successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to bring their own ideas and techniques for improving the productivity of our structure pipelines, and to continue innovating after they start here.

This Role Might Be For You If You:

  • Are highly collaborative
  • Are able to work on many different projects simultaneously, with excellent record-keeping and time management skills
  • Can quickly understand complex research projects
  • Can clearly communicate results to various audiences, most of whom will have little or no experience in structural biology
  • Direct the course of your work without extensive supervision

This position requires a PhD in structural biology or a related field and 0-4 years of postdoctoral experience. This position is intended for an early-career structural biologist, perhaps someone with X-ray crystallographic training who wants to learn cryo-electron microscopy, or a cryoEM scientist who wants to learn crystallography. However, the ideal candidate will have significant experience in both structural techniques.

Since this position will be hands-on in the lab, a substantial amount of experience purifying and characterizing proteins is also vital. Direct experience with membrane proteins will be an advantage.

The successful candidate must have a demonstrated track record of independent research including one or more first-author publications.
