Scientist I 




The primary responsibilities of this role, Scientist I, are to:


  • Validate and optimize high throughput assays to screen a microbial  strain collection for activity against plant pathogenic bacteria;
  • Demonstrate good project management skills by initiating, overseeing and coordinating activities to ensure project milestones and deliverables are completed on time;
  • Capable of dealing with uncertainties and complexities by being solution oriented;
  • Communicate experimental results, activity status and potential  concerns in an effective and timely manner to appropriate internal and external stockholders;
  • Identify and implement process improvements to laboratory processes;
  • Manage confidentiality of competitive know-how;
  • Survey scientific literature to exploit new technologies and  know-hows to solve scientific problems creatively;
  • Organize the shipment of biological materials to colleagues around  other Bayer sites;
  • Ensure compliance with all existing safety and stewardship standards in the area of responsibility.

Required Qualifications:


  • PhD with minimal years' experience, or MS with 2+ years relevant experience, or Bachelor's Degree with  5+ years relevant experience;
  • Extensive experience in culturing diverse bacterial strains;
  • Experience in high throughput assay development;
  • A strong understanding of bacterial propagation and submerged liquid fermentation in multiple formats such as culture blocks, shake flasks, mircoreactor, and bioreactors;
  • Strong organizational, record keeping, and time-management skills;
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills;
  • Flexible and able to handle multiple tasks;
  • Capable of working independently as well as part of a team;
  • Ability to work well in a shared laboratory setting and able to  communicate research needs to others;
  • Creativity and flexible problem solving skills;
  • Capable of developing novel yet "fit for purpose" approaches or solutions;
  • Ability to collaborate with both internal and external stake holders;
  • Ability to work through challenges and drive screening platform to deliver on project milestones.


Preferred skills/experience:


  • Experience with automation platforms/robotics and statistical modeling of data;
  • Fermentation, microbiology or biochemistry experience preferred.
