Core scope of practice includes preoperative patient management, intra-operative surgical first-assist, and postoperative care under the supervision/sponsorship of a physician member of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Professional Staff. 


  • Successful completion of Registered Nurse First Assistant program that includes a didactic and at least 120 hours of clinical component 


Georgia licensed Registered Nurse


  • 2 years of experience in perioperative nursing in both a scrub and circulating role


  • Basic Life Support (BLS)


  • No minimally required knowledge, skills, or abilities


  1. Performs perioperative patient management in collaboration with other healthcare providers.
    • Performs preoperative evaluation/focused nursing assessment.
    • Communicates/collaborates with other healthcare providers regarding patient plan of care.
  2. Performs intraoperative surgical first-assisting.
    • Uses instruments/medical devices.
    • Provides exposure.
    • Handles and/or cuts tissue.
    • Provides hemostasis.
    • Performs suturing.
  3. Conducts postoperative patient management in collaboration with other healthcare providers in the immediate  postoperative period and beyond.
    • Participates in postoperative rounds.
    • Assists with discharge planning and identifying appropriate community resources as needed.


Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.


Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
