Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): The scope of this position is to contribute to the maximal operating efficiency of a cutting edge micro/nano-fabrication laboratory. This requires the ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade state-of-the-art equipment to support the entire portfolio of projects undertaken by Thin Films Research to support multiple Corning business divisions. The position requires the successful candidate to proficiently operate in the mechanical, electrical, and chemical domains in a cleanliness-controlled environment.


Day to Day Responsibilities: Responsibilities include daily monitoring of selected equipment and systems infrastructure in the Thin Films Research laboratories to provide uninterrupted operation, performance of routine scheduled maintenance activities, and coordination and collaboration with building infrastructure engineering groups. The technician will provide assistance with troubleshooting using diagnostic equipment and root cause failure analysis. As the need arises, the technician may be assigned responsibility for small projects related to the repair of selected equipment, or the upgrade or reconfiguration of equipment to support new processes.


Travel requirements (please note if international): < 5%

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours per week, with occasional opportunities for overtime. Some flexibility exists outside core work hours of 8 AM to 4 PM, but within standard 6 AM to 6PM working hours.


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration): The successful candidate will possess at least an Associate’s degree in a technical discipline, and have demonstrated functional experience (at least 6 months) with cleanroom operations and procedures, and the operation, maintenance, and repair of high vacuum equipment.


Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess):

1. Experience sustaining and developing equipment and processes on vacuum/plasma equipment.

2. Demonstrated ability in solving complex equipment / process problems.

3. Experience in developing control hardware and/or software for process equipment.

4. Experience in utilizing, repairing and modifying process equipment.

5. Familiarity with cleanroom processes and protocols.


Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):

1. Thin film processing by physical vapor deposition (PVD) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

2. Vacuum/plasma processing and/or diagnostics

3. Photolithography

4. Etching of thin films by wet and dry (plasma) techniques

5. Fabrication of thin film structures or devices


Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership):

1. Ability to develop and communicate simple project plans, schedules, and resource requirements to complete maintenance, repair, and upgrade activities on process equipment.

2. Ability to work well with a wide range of personalities in a dynamic, research-based environment
