Scope of Position:

This position is for a Research Technician in Particle and Surface Metrology within Characterization Sciences. Characterization Sciences is an enabling technology group with Corning’s Science & Technology Division supporting existing and next-generation technology development for the various stages of Corning’s Research, Development and Manufacturing/Engineering campaigns. Particle & Surface Metrology is the knowledge center for powder static characterization and porosity across Corning Incorporated providing service testing, problem solving and knowledge sharing for Corning’s various businesses and divisions. Testing includes particle size, specific surface area, powder skeletal density and porosity/pore size distribution. Expanded capabilities include powder dynamic properties including transport and rheological behavior and susceptibility to moisture sorption. The ideal candidate will be capable of working in a laboratory performing laboratory tasks with the ability to adapt between routine characterization protocols and adaptive new methods to meet customer-specific requirements. Troubleshooting of machinery and problem-solving related to measurement science would be beneficial but not essential. This position will require working independently with minimal or no supervision while also functioning in an interdependent team environment.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Provide technical support in the area of powder and porous materials characterization to enable the study of physical properties of materials.

• Prepare specimens and instrument operation while rigorously following documented test protocols.

• Perform laboratory experiments related to powder static/dynamic properties and porosity characterization of bulk solids.

• Assist in developing methods and procedures as required for new and/or adapted measurement systems.

• Complete routine maintenance of testing equipment and monitor quality of data via SPC charts.

• Provide recommendations as needed based on data reporting and interpretation.

Travel requirements (please note if international):

Minimal Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours/week, daytime shift, occasional overtime when absolutely necessary

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s or Associates degree in a technical discipline (e.g. Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics)



Required Skills:

• Knowledge of MS Office products, for data presentation, analysis, documentation and reporting.

 • Ability to diagnose equipment issues, and make minor repairs occasionally

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):

• Measurement system operation experience

• Ability to monitor and execute designed experiments

• Experience with powders and porous materials and characterization technology/instrumentation thereof

• Experience with powder technology instrumentation and/or porous materials characterization
