This is your opportunity to join our dedicated team of research specialist at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. Your primary role will be to provide direct assistance to pathologists in support of necropsies of lab animal species.  

Review, comprehend and comply with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area.  Receive and accesses all incoming specimens for the pathologist on duty. Enter data into the WebHealth and histology databases. Coordinate with different investigators, regarding animal submissions and individual requirements.


Prepare necropsy materials for each procedure. Assist pathologist on duty with necropsy. Take photographs of animals and tissues that must be documented for diagnostic, collaborative, and phenotyping procedures. Transfer photos into pathologist’s file in computer system. Collects blood through I.C., I.O., tail, and other routes when directed and process collected blood samples as directed. Perform ectoparasite checks; assure that all tissues collected are fixed and processed and that bone tissues are decalcified. Cut and trims tissues, then submits them to histology for processing. Follows-up on all processed tissues for pathologists. Assist assigned pathologist in prosecting for phenotyping procedure.


Maintain inventory of all materials required in the necropsy room. Share responsibility for departmental housekeeping and maintains appropriate inventory levels of departmental supplies.  Assists with the receipt, stocking and ordering of supply inventories. Clean and maintain necropsy and utility room daily. Wash all tissue collection jars.  Actively interact with customers as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance. Prepare and submit written reports, charts, logs and inventories as requested by Supervisor.


The successful candidate will possess:

Bachelor’s degree (B.A. /B.Sc.) in technically related field (e.g. Biology) required. Minimum of one year of related technical experience preferred.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above. HT/HTL certification preferred.  AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level or higher or certification within one year of hire or promotion preferred.
