Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Utilize dual beam Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) characterization tools to provide technical understanding and problem solving for various aspects of chemistry, materials science and physics in a corporate research environment in support of diverse businesses in the glass, ceramics and life sciences fields. The scientist in this position will be responsible for TEM sample preparation of materials generated from Corning’s research, development, and production facilities using dual beam FIB and conventional TEM sample preparation (mechanical polishing, grinding etc.), TEM analysis using aberration corrected (S)TEM instrument, as well as maintenance of the equipment. The candidate will have to be able to handle multiple priorities and work in a fast paced environment and be required to develop experimental plans, interpret data, and present results while interacting as part of interdisciplinary teams to help solve material and process related problems. Writing technical reports and contributing to intellectual property is also an expectation in this role. A successful candidate will work as a part of a team and be expected to rapidly gain working knowledge of various analytical techniques, and develop new methods for TEM characterization and sample preparation over time.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Support TEM sample preparation by using dual beam FIB or conventional TEM sample preparation methods.

• Perform TEM analysis, including electron diffraction, EDS and EELS.

• Perform FIB tomography using dual beam FIB.

• Manage equipment and resources to keep the lab running and in good working order.

• Use rigorous technical knowledge to build fundamental understanding of materials and processes.

• Provide inputs and/or documents ideas and contributions to intellectual property and technical reports as well as refereed publications.

• Provide day-to-day measurements and problem solving support to Research, Development and Corning Incorporated businesses

• Document data and writes reports and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory processes and instrumentation.

• Function as a team member or team leader on focused projects.

• Make technical presentations to customers as needed.


Travel requirements (please note if international): Minimal travel <5%

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Flex time, 40+ hours per week, off hours as necessary for project support


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration): Minimum of BS in physics, chemistry, materials science or related field with 2+ years of hands-on experience in TEM characterization and sample preparation by dual beam FIB and conventional methods.


Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess):

• Solid understanding of electron microscopy.

• Hands-on experience with Dual Beam FIB and S/TEM microscopes.

• Hands-on experience with sample preparation techniques (dual FIB and conventional) required for S/TEM analysis.

• Basic understanding of chemistry and materials combined with strong analytical and data analysis skills

• Demonstrated desire to work hands-on in collecting analytical data

• Clear, analytical thinking and problem solving approach.

 • Very good communication skills. • Self-motivated and interested in long term technical growth in the characterization area.

• Ability to handle multiple and changing priorities.
