Description

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): • Process & product modeling for various Corning projects. • SME in mathematical and numerical modeling of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and multiphysics problems. • Technical lead in modeling projects. • Mentor and coach for junior modeling scientists.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities: • Lead or participate in cross functional teams to solve research and development problems • Develop analytical or numerical models to solve complex physical problems in research, development, engineering and manufacturing. • Communicate results to teams, stake-holders and Corning customers as needed. • Document findings with internal and external publications • Mentor and coach junior modeling scientists • Contribute to process and product innovations using modeling results • Contribute to the development of Corning’s modeling competency

 

Travel requirements (please note if international): • Limited travel, likely <15%.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: • Normal Business Hours 8:00-5:00 with additional hours occasionally needed for urgent project demands

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration): Ph.D. in applied mathematics or mechanics

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess): • Strong background in applied mathematics and numerical analysis. • Extensive knowledge and experience with commercial modeling software including but not limited to Matlab, ABAQUS, ANSYS, or Comsol. • Extensive industrial experience in solving complex physical problems. • Experience in leading research and development projects. • Strong capability in mentoring and coaching junior scientists and engineers. • Clear, analytical thinking and problem solving approach. Practical, results oriented. • Ability to understand and breakdown real world problems into solvable modeling objectives. • Excellent communication skills and strong ability to interact with team members and customers. • Good balance between technical depth and breadth (i.e. flexible and adaptable to multiple technology areas).

 

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess): • Experience with experimental work, directly or in a collaboration • Knowledge and experience in material science and physics other than mechanics. • Knowledge or experience in equipment design
