Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

  • Qualification of new materials and processes on world-wide manufacturing platforms
  • Provide engineering support, theoretical background, and consultation on specific projects, such as the assembly and optimization of new tests or the development of new product qualifications.
  • Globalization and centralization of general product engineering function
  • Interface with internal and external customers as required to resolve technical issues.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Establish product specifications for new or modified products based upon knowledge of the application(s) under which the products will be utilized, an awareness of standards applicable to the products and manufacturing/measurement capabilities. Facilitate agreement of final specifications among commercial, manufacturing, standards, and research and development communities.
  • Design and facilitate product development, qualification, and characterization testing programs for new or modified products. Determine test attributes, test acceptance criteria, sample size and sample selection criteria. Receive, analyze, and publish test results, including comparison against acceptance criteria and statistical analysis, where applicable.
  • Provide technical and/or training support relating to inquiries arising from manufacturing or commercial functions. Solutions may be generated through researching available data or though the design and execution of experiments to generate new data.
  • Assist in executing, maintaining, and improving the systems utilized for product specification documentation and changes, the qualification of process and measurement changes and periodic auditing. Assist in tracking the status and metrics associated with these systems.
  • Establish credibility as a key technical resource within Corning Optical Fiber Cable relative to assigned area(s) of expertise.
  • Interface with testing lab to ensure test procedures and data meet the intent of the Standard and functional requirement.
  • Work closely with Plant Quality and Engineering to review changes to ensure proper change management system is followed.
  • Interface with PLM on customer inquiries on product performance

 

Projects involved with:

  • Qualification of new materials and processes on world-wide manufacturing platforms
  • Provide engineering support, theoretical background, and consultation on specific projects, such as the assembly and optimization of new tests or the development of new product qualification test plans.
  • Globalization and centralization of general product engineering function
  • Interface with external customers as required.

 

Travel:

  • Limited travel required.  Two domestic and one international trips per year possible. 

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 

  • 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Required Education:

  • B.S. Engineering or similar major, M.S. Engineering preferred
  • Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 5-7 years of experience
  • Background in optical fiber cable design and/or manufacturing processes

  • Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of optical fiber cable design and manufacturing processes;
  • Design control and lifecycle management methods and familiarity with the associated systems
  • Project management skills- Displayed ability to effectively manage and execute multiple projects/tasks in parallel
  • Ability to manage and coordinate activities across world-wide manufacturing facilities
  • Ability to assimilate new information quickly and apply past experience to new situations
  • Technical problem solving experience, data-based decision making skills
