Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Primary function of the reliability engineer is to be the reliability subject matter expert for new product development activities. In this role, this person will assess new projects and provide guidance on how to generate knowledge and requirements about materials, designs and processes. This person will help project teams describe solution options and then perform assessments in order to discover failure modes in time to fix them. In this role, the reliability engineer guides project teams toward testing strategies aimed at building knowledge, solving failure modes and benchmarking against industry-focused tests. The person will help guide the program through the well-known reliability growth cycle using established reliability tools. The reliability engineer may also provide the reliability science needed for predictive life modeling. The successful candidate will be comfortable in working with technical product development groups, research scientists and engineering.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with new product development projects
  • Deploy a program focused on finding failure modes for early stage projects 
  • Conduct training for project leaders and team members on early stage reliability fundamentals and practice 
  • Conduct experiments to gain fundamental knowledge to address the technical challenges 
  • Identify requirements for new product concepts or evolutionary product changes 
  • Identify and document potential solutions paths 
  • Identify potential critical challenges and failure modes 
  • Develop strategies to solve failure modes 
  • Represent testing strategies aimed at building knowledge, finding failure modes and benchmarking against industry tests 
  • Collaborate with core reliability group

Travel Requirements: Variable but expectation is approx. 20%

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours per week w/ flex time

Required Education: At least a Master’s Degree in an engineering discipline or Reliability Science

Required Years and Area of Experience: 3 years in Reliability Engineering

Required Technical Skills: 

  • Technical expertise in an engineering discipline 
  • Decent background and experience on polymer material and their fracture mechanics 
  • Ability to create appropriate experimental plans and perform statistical analyses 
  • Laboratory experience with the equipment and test methods used in materials testing 
  • Ability to work across organizational boundaries from research to manufacturing 
  • Strong communication skills and comfort in facilitation of technical personnel

Desired Skills: 

  • Exposure to in tools for reliability such as FMA, FMEA, FTA 
  • Exposure to Predictive Life Modeling 
  • Industry experience 
  • Customer facing interaction and communication skills/experience 
  • Experience in manufacturing environment

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership): 

  • Team player who enjoys collaboration 
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and presentation skills 
  • Facilitation skills to enable leading of teams through ambiguous evaluations 
  • Ability to work with small to medium sized cross-functional technical teams

  • Comfortable with a hands-on approach to problem solving
