R&D Scientist, Cell / Molecular Biology

Position Summary:

The R&D team is responsible for identifying and developing new technologies and products that fit with the Catalent Biologics strategic plan helping to expand and further develop the Catalent Biologics offerings.

This position will perform innovation, experimental design and laboratory procedures in the field of cell and molecular biology. Procedures including include creation of cell lines, routine maintenance of cell lines, gene construct design, various cell culture techniques, various molecular biology techniques, creative thinking, problem solving, accurate documentation, design of and participation in experiments and interpretation of data are required.

This is a full-time, salaried position. Monday-Friday, 1st shift.

Our new, state of the art Madison, WI facility, with expanded mammalian cell line engineering and biomanufacturing capabilities utilizing single-use systems, offers increased flexibility and manufacturing scale to support our customers' growth. We offer a broad range of integrated formulation and analytical services to solve your most difficult development challenges in Biologics.

The Role:

* Initiates, directs and executes scientific research for innovation and process improvements
* Researches and develops existing and new technologies/process improvements
* Critically analyzes complex data, interprets and integrates experimental results with project objectives
* Writes complex procedural SOPs
* Accurately reviews batch records and other data, ensuring consistency
* Knowledge and understanding of most all commonly used mammalian cell biology processes and techniques
* Knowledge and understanding of most all commonly used molecular biology processes and techniques
* Knowledge and understanding of retroviral biology
* Maintains cell lines
* Performs general lab housekeeping, including cleaning/sterilizing of lab and lab materials, disposal of trash and recyclables, autoclaving, ordering and stocking supplies, etc.
* Accurately completes routine and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment
* Actively participates in team meetings
* Makes supplements, media, and/or buffers as necessary
* Develop genetic constructs for introduction into proprietary gene transfer vectors for the expression of proteins in mammalian cells. Proteins may be expressed for initial gene validation or as produce well-characterized pharmaceutical products.
* Develop DNA and RNA based assays needed for evaluation of products and product intermediates.
* Participate in the development of new vector construct strategies and methods of use to streamline production of cell lines and diversify protein expression applications.
* Maintain comprehensive, current, historical and analytic records (including source, derivation, sequence, and restriction maps) to assist in regulatory compliance.
* Assure safety of laboratory operations by complying with safety/biosafety procedures
* Ability to independently create presentations and conduct presentations outside of Catalent. Structures presentations with audience business focus in mind. Presents technical capabilities at client meetings. Presents at industry working groups.
* Ability to constructively edit documents written by others, and mentor others in written skills while allowing individual approach. Perform review or writing of technical documents for entire site, as needed.
* Mentors others, as assigned
* Performs lab overview for client tours and internal clients (shadowing)
* Maintain effectiveness of the Quality System
* Other duties as assigned

The Candidate:

* Ph.D. in Biotechnology, cell biology, molecular biology or related field with at least 0- 2 years of laboratory experience.
* MS in Biotechnology, cell biology, molecular biology or related field with at least 5 years of industry laboratory experience.
* Bachelors or Associates Degree in Biotechnology, cell biology, molecular biology or related field, with at least 8 years of industry laboratory experience.
