The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


Purpose of Position

The purpose of this position is to reduce the total cost of purchased items by

  1. Understanding and, as needed, improving supplier measurement and process capabilities (CPKs)
  2. reducing incoming inspection
  3. and improving the quality of outsourced parts as received into production


Major Responsibilities (Ongoing Tasks)

  1. Reduce total cost of outsourced materials by
    1. Leveraging Corning’s Product Quality Architecture (PQA) principles to develop supplier process capabilities (measurements, data, and process) and in turn reduce incoming inspection labor in addition to reducing disruptions to production caused by nonconforming purchased components.
    2. Improving supplier’s quality systems through supplier audits and other supplier improvement activities.
    3. Streamlining the sharing of data between suppliers and Corning and developing the use of SPC internally and with suppliers.
    4. Cultivating our relationship with suppliers and collaborating with them to improve their manufacturing processes and our documented specifications.
  2. Qualify alternate supplier sourcing through the use of the existing supplier qualification process and experimental system.
  3. Interface with suppliers and verify robust solutions for corrective actions assigned to suppliers.
  4. Position could require up to 20% total travel time in support of domestic and international suppliers.
  5. Work hours are M-F 7:00 to 4:00 but flexibility will be required to communicate with suppliers in other time zones.


Job Qualifications


Required: BS in Mechanical Engineering

Desired: MS in Mechanical Engineering


Experience (A strong candidate will have at least 5 out of 8 of the following listed in the order of importance)

  • Specifying, measuring, or manufacturing of high precision machined components
  • Proficient in use of GD&T
  • Use of MSAs and SPC
  • Writing and evaluating experiment plans
  • Able to program CMM or vision systems
  • Mechanical measurement equipment
  • Determining and utilizing measurement uncertainty
  • Supplier Management


Knowledge, Skills and Behaviors

  • A strong knowledge of statistics including the application of CPK, MSA, and SPC
  • A deep understanding of GD&T
  • A thorough understanding of measurement processes and how to determine and manage measurement uncertainty
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/oral communications skills
