Smart Manufacturing Systems Lead Engineer, responsible for architecting and developing leading edge Smart Manufacturing systems innovating and using state of the art computational systems for product and process development, revolutionary manufacturing systems, and supply chain connectivity.

Scope of Position:

  • Lead cross-functional project teams developing and deploying state of the art Smart Manufacturing systems. Work with design teams inside and outside Corning to extend the state of the art. This role will require a broad technology set integrating engineering, operations and information technology skills as well as very strong communications skills.
  • Work with customers to define project specifications.
  • Research applicable technologies.
  • Interface with industry experts to expand Corning expertise and experience in key emerging technology areas.
  • Working in a team environment - architect systems.
  • Lead and perform lab work to test new technologies, expanding our measurements and automation toolbox.
  • Deliver innovative capability to address a wide array of R&D & Business needs.
  • Mentor developing engineers and scientists.


  • MS/PhD EE/CS.


  • Prior experience Architecting/Implementing big data management systems for revolutionary process design for R&D and Pilot Manufacturing use. Experience working in technology development and leading development projects. Able to participate in large development programs, interfacing with equipment and systems builders and providing back end solutions meeting performance, cost, timeline, and capability deliverables.

Required Skills

  • Software - Programming - C/C++, C#, Python, Java
  • Database (traditional and data lake)– broad experience with data storage approaches; multiple SQL variants, distributed architectures (Hive/Spark), NoSQL, etc
  • Linux, Windows, Embedded platforms
  • Systems experience in Cognitive Computation (ML, AI, etc.)
  • Familiarity with many ISA-95 standard compliant systems architectures, communication protocols, and software solutions (level 0-level 4. Project Leadership
  • Experience leading projects developing and deploying advanced data management systems for development and pilot manufacturing.

Travel Requirements (please note if international):

  • Project Dependent, averaging <20%

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Standard Hours are M-F, 8-5. Flex time is supported.

Required Education (minimum required for consideration): 

  • MS Required Years and Area of Experience (minimum required for consideration): MS - 15+ PHD - 10+
