Corning’s Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.

Scope of Position:

Provide process engineering skills for the introduction of new products into manufacturing.  Serve as a champion for process engineering best practices.  Deliver step change improvements in processes or product attributes.  Use the scientific method to drive to fundamental understanding.  Improve process understanding, product quality, process capability, and reduce manufacturing costs.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Provide process engineering skills for process improvements for existing manufacturing products and processes, process development for new products, and root cause understanding for production issues
  • Develop tools for fundamental understanding of processes
  • Use the scientific method to drive for fundamental understanding
  • Work in a cross-functional environment:  link between development, quality, commercial, and manufacturing to deliver the best possible solution
  • Use of rigorous tools to deliver results including problem analysis, potential problem analysis, risk assessment, DMAIC methodology, innovation
  • Experimental design to determine and optimize important process variability and product parameter
  • Use engineering principles and data to solve problems, including production issues
  • Support individual or multiple plants within CET
  • Ensure best practices are communicated, evaluated, and implemented
  • Promote and develop technical growth and responsibility among department technicians
  • Integrate problem solutions into production and validate results.  Provide second level production support.
  • Translate work, solutions, and directions into presentation to leadership that can be understood and are actionable

Projects involved with:

  • New product introductions into manufacturing
  • Process improvements for existing products
  • Process development for new products
  • Root cause understanding for production issues

Travel Requirements: < 25%.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Typically M-F, 8-5, but some off hours support is required

 Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum: BS. in Ceramic, Chemical, Materials, or Mechanical engineering + 2-3 years of experience
  • Preferred: M.S/Ph.D in Ceramic, Chemical, Materials, or Mechanical engineering + 0-3 years of experience

Required Skills:

  • Sound engineering background
  • Use of scientific method to solve challenging problems
  • Knowledge of materials processing
  • Working knowledge of basic statistics and process engineering principles
  • Communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to use data to drive to solutions
  • Strong drive to succeed and implement solutions
