Scope of Position:

Process Engineer that applies fundamental understanding of materials chemistry and engineering principles to develop melting process capability through scientific methodology. Key objectives range from daily operations management, continuous improvement of existing processes, elevating process performance and interfacing with technology development.



• Provide engineering support for Pollution abatement process set-up development, control and management to achieve key objectives.

• Develop and communicate engineering plans and progress.

• Design and manage process experimentation.

• Write standard operating procedures to document best known practices.

• Plan and direct maintenance activities.

• Use technical analysis and analytical results to improve and troubleshoot processes.

• Interface with corporate engineering and external contractors to facilitate continuous improvement and process optimization.


Travel Requirements:  <10%


Working Hours:

• Office hours are typically 8AM-5PM, Monday – Friday.

• This is a 24/7 operation so response to off hour calls are to be expected in case of issues or emergencies.

• Weekend work may be required at times.

• Required to sign Covenant Not to Compete.


Education / Experience:

• B.S. in Engineering required – Chemical Engineering or Materials Science/Engineering.

• 3+ years relevant working experience.       

• Other engineering disciplines considered with strong chemicals and/or materials processing, environmental or pollution abatement experience.


Required Skills:

• Strong technical skills:

  • Able to understand complex processes and mentally model impact of changes:
  • Fundamental understanding of complex processes, process management, control theory and sequence of operation.
  • Deep understanding of chemistry and/or materials science – Combustion gasses, corrosion/metallurgy, acid neutralization o Heat and mass transfer – Understanding of volumes, temperatures, evaporation rate, particulate, effects of temperature on condensation, precipitation, and gas volume.
  • Basic understanding or ability to quickly learn of environmental air emission, permit, hazardous waste management.

• Technically curious – Ability and desire to learn unfamiliar processes and scientific applications.

• Analytical skills – ability to use rigorous data analysis and distill into concise results.

• Statistical analysis skills and/or experimental design experience.

• Proven problem-solving skills – ability to think independently and handle technical challenges using scientific methodology.

• Project management:

  • Prioritize – projects, maintenance, day-to-day activities o Cost control – risk and benefit o Lead contractor / suppliers – cleaning schedules, etc.
  • Lead / direct union workers.

• MS Office computing skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).


Desired Skills:

• Understanding of pollution abatement systems (specifically bag house and spray tower) and fundamental operating principles.

• Attention to details.

• Experience with programming or numerical analysis of flow, structural, or thermal analysis.

• Ability to develop understanding of Corning’s technologies and processes quickly.

• Continuous manufacturing process experience.

• Project leadership skills – vision, planning, and execution.
