Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

The purpose of this position is:

Ensure product integrity by recommending approval of engineering changes in product design and process. 


  • Ensure plant bills of materials and routings are consistent with the master design documents. 
  • Assisting manufacturing and engineering personnel with any issues pertaining to the process or material designs.
  • Maintain process capability for automated production lines.
  • Lead or participate in projects for cost reduction, process improvements to address quality issues or reduce production cycle times.
  • Support the implementation of robust product quality architecture for new and existing products.  Utilize statistical techniques (DOE, SPC), manufacturing intelligence data, and engineering methodologies to develop process understanding to support robust manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in new product development projects as the Manufacturing representative, focusing on “Design for Manufacturability”.  Use Stage Gate defined and DMAIC processes as appropriate.
  • Ensure quality issues caused by process issues or product performance are addressed through improvement projects and design change.  Product Quality Architecture should be updated as necessary.
  • Identify gaps in manufacturing capabilities and address those gaps using engineering techniques and methodologies

Travel requirements: up to 50%

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Engineering Degree, preferably Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronic or Chemical
  • Minimum of 3 years’ in an automation or process engineering role
  • Fundamental understanding of electrical design practices, machine / motion control systems, electro-mechanical systems, robotics, programming, and system integration
  • Demonstrated knowledge of control systems design, programming, and systems integration with understanding of open loop and closed loop control systems.
  • Familiar with state of the art technologies in the following areas: control system integration, control system architectures, PLCs/PACs, motion control systems, electro-mechanical drive systems, robotics, part sensing, vision, risk assessment, and safety systems
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Good problems solving and analytical capabilities (particularly statistical analysis)
  • Excellent communications, interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • High initiative, able to work with a minimum of direction, and able to work in team environment

  • IMS database knowledge: Pi / iFix / SCADA
