Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

Process Capabilities engineer will support the glassmaking process for optical fiber manufacturing on a division level. The primary mission is to apply technical knowledge to advance manufacturing capabilities.


Project assignments will require broad application of engineering skills, and include process improvement, cost reduction, process and raw material optimization, engineered safety improvements, and ensuring manufacturing readiness for new processes.


Position is in the Division Engineering organization within Corning Optical Fiber and Cable (OFC).


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Apply fundamental Chemical/materials engineering concepts to drive capability advancements in glass manufacturing process.
  • Lead cost reduction and process improvement projects that have division-wide implication.
  • Work between technology and plant manufacturing organizations to ensure smooth deployment of new technologies, products, and processes by identifying and and/or leading implementation of required capabilities.
  • Collaborate with global manufacturing sites to coordinate and solve glassmaking-related technical issues.


Travel Requirements:

15-20% (+/-) in North America. Some International travel may also be required depending on work assignments.


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

Typically 40+ hours per week, some weekends work may be required depending on travel schedules or job assignment.


Required Education:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Material, Chemical, or Ceramic Engineering
  • GPA>3.0 from ABET accredited program.
  • Focus on Glass and/or Ceramics Preferred


Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 7+ Years total Engineering Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in glass/ceramic manufacturing or fabrication


Required Skills:

  • Strong understanding of chemical processes, including glass and ceramics
  • Leadership-The ability to organize and lead small groups of cross functional teams
  • Technical competence in process engineering
  • Working knowledge of physical phenomena (heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, etc.) and thermodynamics with a strong background in relating material properties to process conditions and product attributes
  • Process rigor as it pertains to process control and documentation
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at technical problem solving and equipment troubleshooting
  • Mastery of fundamental engineering concepts with demonstrated ability to apply to manufacturing problems.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment that, on occasion, requires support outside typical work schedule to complete assignments
  • Able to work in a team based environment and lead or participate on a highly matrixed team.
  • Possesses sound problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Highly motivated and focused on delivering results.
  • Knowledge of statistical concepts and analysis software.
  • Strong data analysis skills, including ability to query databases and analyze in Excel, Minitab, JMP, etc.


Desired Skills:

  • Able to collaborate with varied levels and functions within the organization, including manufacturing, technology, R&D, operations, procurement, IT, and supply chain.
  • Prior experience moving a new product or process from development into manufacturing.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt
