Position Overview: 

The Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences group at Merck Research Labs in Boston, MA is actively recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to develop novel formulations for the delivery of next-generation mucosal vaccines. The postdoc will design and develop novel formulations intended to overcome the physiological barriers associated with mucosal delivery and maximize the efficiency of antigen delivery using a combination of in vitro and in vivo assays. For this multidisciplinary project, the postdoc will work with a creative, collaborative team of motivated scientists from diverse fields, including pharmaceutical science, immunobiology, vaccines/infectious disease biology, and microbiome research.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Development and physicochemical characterization of vaccine formulations suitable for mucosal administration, with a focus on oral delivery
  • Development of small-scale in vitro screening techniques to predict formulation performance
  • Formulation iteration and optimization based on in vivo performance in murine models
  • Independent experimental design, execution, and troubleshooting
  • Effective collaboration on a multidisciplinary team
  • Data analysis and written and oral presentation of results
  • Manuscript preparation and publication
  • Contribution to a safe and compliant laboratory work environment


Education Minimum Requirement:
  • PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, biological engineering, pharmaceutical science, biochemistry, or related field with fewer than 3 years of postdoctoral experience, or graduate student anticipating meeting all the requirements of a PhD by spring/summer of 2018

Required Experience and Skills:
  • Experience in formulation development and advanced drug delivery technologies, with an emphasis on particle-based or targeted delivery systems
  • Very strong analytical skills and experience in physicochemical characterization techniques such as liquid chromatography, light scattering, microscopy, and spectrophotometric assays 
  • Understanding of oral absorption and GI physiology in humans and relevant preclinical species
  • Superior verbal & written communication skills
  • An excellent record of academic achievement, including publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Strong personal character and ethics 

Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Good working knowledge in the field of immunology or vaccinology
  • Development of immuno-stimulatory formulations
  • Hands-on experience in microbiology, biochemistry, or molecular/synthetic biology
