The Analytical Sciences group within Merck Research Laboratory (MRL) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow based in Rahway, NJ. As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to develop monoclonal antibodies formulations. You will conceive, design, plan and implement advanced experiments/assays exploring the mechanisms of degradation and interactions of co-formulated monoclonal antibodies. Major focuses of the research are the development of advanced chemical assays, the implementation of mass spectrometry and other analytical techniques to help forecasting the stability of protein mixtures.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Designing mass spectrometry techniques for the analysis of mixtures of monoclonal antibodies.
  • Improving current state-of-the-art capillary electrophoresis and liquid chromatography techniques for separation of proteins for mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Developing mass spectrometry compatible chemical assays aiming at accelerating formulation designs of protein mixtures.
  • Building chemical and mechanistic databases to serve as the underpinnings for future data mining.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement: 

  • A PhD in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or organic chemistry with less than (3) years of postdoctoral experience OR graduating with a PhD by summer of 2019. 
Required Experience and Skills: 

  • Skilled in advanced protein mass spectrometry: Experienced with Thermo instruments (e.g. Orbitrap®, Fusion Lumos®), BiopharmaFinder® and Byonic® softwares.
  • Thorough theoretical trainings in mass spectrometry.
  • Knowledge of nano liquid chromatography (Waters M-class®) and capillary electrophoresis (Sciex® instrument).
Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Strong history of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Organic chemistry.
  • Bioinformatics.
  • Bioanalytical experience, SDS-page, Size-exclusion chromatography, Western blot.
