Overview

Primarily remote but needs to be within the Waterloo area.

The Medication Assistance Advocate (MAA) will administer the Medication Assistance Program on behalf of the health system. This multi-faceted role requiring expertise in Pharmacy and Billing with an understanding of Case Management and Social Work facilitates financial assistance for patients related to medications. The MAA will qualify patients for enrollment, secure appropriate documentation, track requested and received products, track reimbursements and maintain professional working relationships with medical and hospital staff. The Advocate will utilize database management to develop site specific reports. This position also requires professional presentation and communication skills and a working knowledge of medications.

Responsibilities

Medication Advocate

* Identify and enroll qualified patients for medication assistance programs related to their therapy/medication.
* Utilization of software to run timely reports and receiving referrals from other members of the health care team.
* Secure and review applicable paperwork/applications to facilitate patient enrollment in programs.
* Execute logistics of assistance programs including, but not limited to, product replenishment, co-pay reimbursement, payment arrangements, prescription cards, coupons, and foundations.
* Responsible for establishing and executing communication to keep patients informed and knowledgeable about the medication assistant program and financial obligations.
* Responsible for identifying when a patient should be requesting a new supply of medication by establish and maintain tracking tools, reports and other resources.
* Identify when an action is needed by a provider, contact the provider, initiate the application and contact the patient.
* Monitor posting of payments and reimbursements
* Track, monitor and report metrics to Supervisor timely.
* Research errors, discrepancies and patient inquiries demonstrating premium customer service.
* Responsive to questions, inquires from both internal and external customers.
* Communicate concerns, discrepancies and other issues to Supervisor or appropriate leadership.

* Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
* Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications

Education:

* High school graduate or general education degree (GED)

Experience:

* Pharmacy Technician experience - Required
* Proficient with computer applications, especially Microsoft Excel
* Knowledge of medical billing and collection practices, familiarity with billing codes (i.e., HCPCS, DRGs, and CPT codes) preferred

License(s)/Certification(s):

* As required by work site's state Board of Pharmacy, registered as a Pharmacy Technician
* As required by work site's state Board of Pharmacy, Certified Pharmacy Technician
* Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

* Reads, writes, comprehends and speaks fluent English
* Computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser,
* Provides written and verbal communication suitable to receiver of communication
