Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated, compassionate leader to join our growing team as a Pharmacy Technician Supervisor for the University of Michigan Health Community Pharmacy Off-Site Locations! We have three community pharmacy off-site locations (located away from our main medical campus), including the East Ann Arbor Pharmacy, Brighton Center for Specialty Care Pharmacy, and the Kellogg Eye Center Pharmacy. Our team is committed to providing exceptional patient care in an innovative, technology-driven, and patient-centered pharmacy care model across our locations.

The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Off-Site Community Pharmacies will play a critical role in leading and growing an innovative, technology-driven, and patient-centric pharmacy care model, and will help set the tone for UM Health Community Pharmacy culture, performance, and reputation. The responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Off-Site Community Pharmacies will include:

  • In collaboration with the Pharmacy Manager, perform personnel management responsibilities for pharmacy technician staff, including the interviewing, hiring, training, and on-boarding of new employees, promotion of employees, setting professional development goals in collaboration with employees, conducting of annual and quarterly performance reviews, reviewing and approving timecards, and providing disciplinary action or termination when necessary
  • In collaboration with the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, On-Site Community Pharmacies, develop the pharmacy technician schedule and arrange daily staffing plans in response to call-ins and other staff absences
  • Provide functional supervision of pharmacy technician staff working in the area, including ensuring completion of job assignments and adherence to institutional policies and procedures
  • Manage operations of technician-related pharmacy services and review related documents on a regular basis to ensure they are kept accurate and up to date
  • Promote the standardization of policies, procedures, and workflows across the UM Community Pharmacies
  • Conduct problem-solving related to patient or customer complaints and complex medication-related issues, including follow-up with employees, department heads, and leadership team as appropriate
  • Actively contribute to the strategic planning and achievement of departmental goals and objectives
  • Communicate issues, suggestions, and ideas for improvement to other UM Community Pharmacy Leadership Team members
  • Lead, attend, and serve as representative for the UM Community Pharmacies at various meetings and committees
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and USP standards, including for both sterile and non-sterile compounding at the UM Community Pharmacies
  • Work under the direction of a registered pharmacist in processing, compounding, and filling medications pursuant to a prescription
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Director, Community Pharmacy Services and Transitions of Care
The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is also expected to be able to perform all essential characteristic duties and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician Senior. This position will serve various practice areas, including multiple community pharmacy sites and a hybrid site that includes OR, sterile compounding, and community pharmacy functions.

Required Qualifications*

  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date: this position requires primary source verification of licensure
  • Pharmacy Technician Senior or Coordinator status, or equivalent (3-5 years) pharmacy experience
  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical activity: lifting, pulling, bending, manual dexterity movements
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, prioritize with accuracy and dependability
  • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability
Desired Qualifications*

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team, and foster a positive culture
  • Strong verbal and written communication, and ability to influence and drive desired behaviors
  • Management or leadership experience in Community or Specialty Pharmacy operations preferred
  • Supervisory experience, especially over pharmacy technicians
  • Demonstrated experience with health care or pharmacy technologies, software, and systems
  • Knowledge of pharmacy regulations
  • Demonstrated record of strong accountability, reliability, and follow through
  • Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Masters degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program
Licensure & Certification

"The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.

Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician."
