GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the pharmacy technician interprets physicians' medication orders using knowledge of medication use in hospitals; packages medications in plastic bags or other approved packaging; picks up medication orders and returned medications and supplies from nursing units; delivers/transfers medications to and from patient care areas and automated dispensing devices; enters/accesses medication orders in the order entry system; verifies and unpacks deliveries of drugs and places them into inventory or storage; prepares sterile intravenous and non-sterile compounded pharmaceutical products; audits and maintains drug/supply inventory; adjusts patient charges for pharmaceutical products; maintains patient records.

Pharmacy technicians do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a licensed pharmacist. Hours may be irregular and include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

* High school diploma, certificate, or equivalent combination of work experience and education.
* Active National Pharmacy Technician Certification.
* If required, registration with the District of Columbia Board of Pharmacy.
