PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

Description:

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Pharmacist, this position is responsible for dispensing medications with precise accuracy, maintenance and upkeep of POS system, maintain accountability of controlled drugs, accurate records maintenance, keep pharmacy stocked and maintain a clean and orderly environment in the pharmacy.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Calculates and converts to proper weights and measures the amount of drug to be dispensed.
Processes Rx claims payments within (POS) Point of Sale billing system. Conducts research on denied Rx claims and processes resubmissions accordingly.
Posts pharmacy payments to patient receivable accounts and reviews denials for resolution. Submits monthly Rx claim payment revenue data to Health Center Business Manager.
Reconstitutes medications for dispensing taking into account the need for accuracy.
Sets up prescription by obtaining correct stock container counting or pouring amount of medication and placing medication in smaller container and placing a prescription label on the container.
Understands common medical and pharmaceutical abbreviations and terminology.
Maintains accountability of controlled drugs at all times.
Records information at the time of dispensing into accountability and inventory control records.
Makes routine tours of areas serviced by pharmacy to report to the pharmacist replenishment needs and report expired medications.
Conducts monthly audit and accountability of clinical and dental setting. Reports any identified quality of care issues, concerns and successes to Health Center Quality Assurance Committee at the direction of Health Center Pharmacist.
Performs refills under the direction of the pharmacist.
Maintains proper recordkeeping and logs and has a pharmacist check all work for accuracy.
Receives supplies and checks receipts against order forms.
Assures that there is no outdated stock in the active storage area and notifies pharmacist prior to expiration of all short dated items in stock.
Identifies and processes Pharmacy office supply orders and maintains active storage area in a clean and orderly fashion.
Performs other duties as assigned by Medical Director and/or Health Center Pharmacist.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of labeling and filling prescriptions for final pharmacist check.
Knowledge of pharmacy packaging equipment, containers, and proper labeling systems.
Knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature, characteristics, dosage forms and drug use.
Knowledge of pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures.
Knowledgeable about procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to maintain security of confidential information.
Specialized skills and an extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices
Strong understanding of Point of Sale billing.
Understanding of patient registrations.
Ability to apply judgment based on substantial experience in pharmaceutical procedures.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience

Required:

High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent
Three (3) years specialized experience in a clinical setting, hospital pharmacy, retail pharmacy, pharmaceutical firms or laboratories.
The following license and/or certifications are required prior to employment start date:

New Mexico CPHT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) certification.
Licensed Pharmacy Technician

Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver's License

Licensing Requirements

Must be able to successfully pass a stringent background and character investigation in compliance with PL 101.630.
Will require a post-offer, pre-employment and random drug screening.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors.
Work hours are 9:30 am to 6:30 pm on Monday and 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday through Friday with some overtime and evening meetings required.
Subject to hazardous materials which may cause bodily harm: smoke, common colds, influenza, dust, odors and elevated noise levels.
Tasks may be performed on uneven, inclined, hard and soft carpeted floors, cement structures and surfaces.
Duties may involve walking, standing for long periods of time, sitting and crouching.
Specific required movements include the following:

Trunk: bend, twist, rotate, push, pull, and carry.
Arms: reach, carry, push, pull, lift, twist, rotate
Legs: lift, push, pull, twist, rotate
Hands: grasp, manipulate, bilateral coordination, eye and hand coordination, overall and finger dexterity.
