The Opportunity: Outpatient Surgery Pharmacy Technician

Why This Role Is Important

Under the direction of the Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy Services and onsite Outpatient Surgery Pharmacist, the Outpatient Surgery Pharmacy Technician will perform a variety of professional level functions to assist in providing patients with optimal pharmaceutical care. The pharmacy technician's efforts will be directed primarily toward automated medication systems management, checking expiration dates on medications, sterile compounding, setting up, repackaging, and labeling medication doses of various forms, dispensing, training personnel, medication quality audits for periprocedural areas and clinics, inventory management, anesthesia tray build/maintenance, emergency carts/kits build/management, and environmental management

What You'll Work On

The Outpatient Surgery Pharmacy Technician will be primarily accountable for:
  • Maintaining the organization and cleanliness of the pharmacy
  • Assisting pharmacist with ordering medication through correct account, receiving, checking-in, rotating, and storing all medications and supplies received from manufacturers, wholesalers, and materials management
  • Checking, stocking, and triaging all automated medication dispensing cabinets (located in the operating rooms, anesthesia workrooms, sterile core, and PACU area) under the direction of a pharmacist
  • Updating and filling code carts, emergency kits, and anesthesia trays under the direction of a pharmacist
  • Completing quarterly medication quality audits for the OR Pharmacy satellite, perioperative area, and clinics where medications are stored and dispensed
  • Identifying, segregating, and logging expired medications
  • Identifying industry drug shortages and reporting trends to on-site pharmacist
  • Receiving surgery center staff at pharmacy entrance and triages incoming calls
  • Prepares patient-specific and bulk lots of sterile products using aseptic techniques per USP
  • Completing checklist for hood monitoring and daily clean room cleaning for quality assurance
  • Performing required media fill, garbing, and fingerprint testing as specified in UPS
  • Completing required competencies and training for sterile compounding and environmental monitoring procedures
  • Assisting in training of pharmacy staff in nonhazardous compounding, medication handling, and preparation (under supervision of pharmacist).
  • Understanding and performing necessary functions in Epic including dispense prep and compounding and repackaging
  • Understanding the laws and regulations regarding the dispensing and handling of controlled substance narcotics
  • Participating in physical inventory of all pharmaceutical products when requested
  • Begin an active participant in process improvement efforts related to applicable areas of medication management and workflow
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications
Required Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Pharmacy technician licensure in New Hampshire
  • Sterile compounding training
Preferred Experience We Hope You Have
  • 2 years of hospital-based experience
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification
  • Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT)
Etc.
