Order receive and store pharmaceutical supplies to maintain current inventory and maintain accurate records of inventory and pricing information. Perform other related duties as required. Ensures that all State and federal laws are followed in regard to handling dispensing and disposing of medication. Maintains adequate drug inventory at all times; obtains drug supplies from wholesaler or other vendors as necessary. Utilizes a cost-effective approach to purchasing. KEY FUNCTIONS: Delivers medication to patient care units expediently and efficiently including delivery to ADC (automated dispensing cabinet) medstations and medication rooms. Prepares and labels sterile parenteral products. Complies with all USP guidelines for sterile preparation. Prepares specialty parenteral solutions such as TPN epidurals PCAs and minibags in conformance with department policy. Demonstrates an understanding of pharmaceutical mathematics principles relative to scope of service provided (e.g. dose calculations infusion rates TPN dosing etc.) Manages anesthesia and surgical services supplies including narcotics and other perioperative agents. Maintains appropriate records for all controlled substances. Performs drug inspections in assigned areas in the patient care unit and remote medical offices. Participates in community outreach initiatives. Maintains records of sample drugs from remote medical offices. Delivers medication supply carts (e.g. crash carts) to patient care units. Assists Pharmacy Clerks with their duties such as patient billing as required by workload or absence of personnel. Provides patient care units with floor stock and emergency supplies. Operates and monitors the laminar flow hood and biological safety cabinet in accordance with department policy. Maintains quality control records of key equipment including temperature monitors and operational efficiency of laminar flow hoods. Passes an annual broth test to determine if aseptic skills are employed when preparing sterile products. Reviews and passes an annual competency assessment of USP skills. Repackages bulk product supply into bar-coded unit-dose packages. Employs WASP and MILT technology. Manages support equipment in the department including computers printers bar-coding devices scanning devices and ADC machines. Demonstrates appropriate garbing techniques for preparing sterile parenteral products. Prepares medication for distribution to the ADC and maintains appropriate records and security of drugs. Replenishes stock supply of large and small volume parenteral solutions. Orders specialty solutions as needed. Maintains appropriate records for the delivery maintenance disposition and return of narcotics. KEY FUNCTIONS: Demonstrates understanding of key ADC functions inc. loading unloading of medications credits returns discrepancy resolution expiration dating and electronic reports Prepares TPN solutions according to dept guidelines. Includes appropriate preparation methods math assessment and understanding of mixing order. Maintains a safe and clean environment. Provides problem solving assistance with ADC devices. Uses appropriate technique for preparing high-risk drugs such as monoclonal antibodies chemotherapy and IV gamma globulins. Prepares minibags antibiotic solutions and large volume parenterals according to dept guidelines. Understands preparation methods for neonatal antibiotic solutions including ampicillin ceftriaxone and gentamicin. Uses pharmaceutical references efficiently including NeoFax Trissell's and King Guide to Parenteral Admixtures. Understands preparation methods of high alert drugs in the ICU including Levophed Morphine and Versed. Purchase and receive medication orders from Cardinal. Selects meds on contract and orders appropriate quantities. Assures that key functions are completed at end of shift. Documents task list with other techs and pharmacist. Assures that sterile room is cleaned according to USP schedule. Work area daily IV room weekly anteroom monthly. Monitors and replaces crash carts when expiration date approaches or when opened. Prepares med kits including adult/pediatric code blue meds contrast reaction kits and rapid sequence intubation kits. Other information: High school graduate or equivalence degree. Completion of one to two years of college preferred. Maintains current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure. Maintains and holds current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or has a minimum of one-year pharmacy technician work experience and achieves and maintains certification within 7 months of hire. Possesses basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite. Comprehensive knowledge of all technical aspects of the drug preparation and distribution process including preparation of sterile parenteral products solid oral dosage forms and unit dose drug preparation. Knowledge of pharmaceutical mathematics principles of aseptic and sterile parenteral techniques dosage forms and routine drug doses.
