Job Summary:

The Pharmacy Specialist - Oncology, under the leadership of the Oncology Pharmacy Coordinator, Inpatient Pharmacy Manager and Oncology Clinic Manager, is responsible for medication approval, dispensing and counseling of patients. Oncology pharmacists fill orders for parenteral and enteral medications, monitor patient drug therapies, and provide drug information. The Pharmacist maintains a thorough understanding of drugs and drug therapy. He or She provides care appropriate to the age and clinical status of the patient served. The Pharmacist provides drug information and training to various hospital personnel and participates in clinical activities necessary for drug therapy, including but not limited to clinical trials, compassionate and investigational medication use. Oncology pharmacists supervise, direct and support pharmacy technicians.

Minimum Requirements:

Education/Qualifications· Completion of a pharmacy college program· Pharm D degree preferred· Board Certification in Oncology is preferred Experience:· Three years hospital pharmacy experience with clinical experience in Oncology is preferred· Familiarity with unit dose dispensing system and IV admixture is required. Licensure/Certificates:· New York State Pharmacist licensure and Registration Skills:· Computer proficiency required· An understanding of good customer relations and strong people skills.· Teaching skills desirable. Physical Requirements:· Must be able to read, write, and speak clearly.· Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard). · May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit dose cassettes, and IV solutions and stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers.). · Sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary. · Must be able to physically operate the equipment used for the job. Critical Demands:· Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision. · Ability to work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff. · Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule. · Ability to set priorities, to make critical decisions, and respond quickly to emergency requests. · Ability to exercise sound professional judgment. · Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. · Ability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, psychiatric, oncology and obstetric patients. Occupational Hazards:· Potential for exposure to infectious patients or materials. · Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions). · Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. · Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used.
